The Great Hall was filled with loud chatter, students filing into the large room and settling in. Nyx was one of them. After taking a carriage pulled by black skeleton looking horses known as thestrals, she finally arrived where the great castle stood tall and proud against the harsh weather.
Tonight, Hogwarts looked beautiful, its walls rising high into the sky, the blanket of night shown stars twinkling in the dark, and the Forbidden Forest in the background made it all so beautiful.
She made her way indoors alongside Caelum after soaking in the castle's exterior. They both entered the Great Hall and made their way to the Slytherin table, taking a seat on the benches and impatiently waiting for the Sorting to get started.
Caelum, like the talkative person he was, started engaging in conversation with the people surrounding him—excluding her. Nyx was more interested in the ceiling which displayed the night's sky even though they were inside.
She watched as a bright star shot past through the clouds, briefly making an appearance before disappearing as soon as it came.
Just then, the loud noise belonging to the students surrounding her started to cease, bringing her out of her trance and turning her head to the podium in which the old headmaster was standing upon and right beside him was a wooden toadstool with an old tethered hat sitting on it. One she immediately recognised as the Sorting Hat. The one and only which had sorted her into her current house. Slytherin.
There were a few words of greeting in which she was too tired to comprehend before he stepped down, the transfiguration professor replacing his place before pulling out a long scroll and reading it off.
"Angus, Klaus," the professor announced, his voice steady but powerful enough to have the whole room silenced.
A boy with mousy brown hair nervously walked up towards professor Dumbledore, slightly stumbling in his steps before finally reaching the stool and sitting down, Dumbledore placing the hat on his head gingerly.
There was a small pause, everyone holding their breath in, too afraid to make any noise as if it might cause disruption to the ceremony. Just then, the tethered old hat opened its mouth, before exclaiming out loud.
"Ravenclaw!"
The whole school abrupt into celebration, Ravenclaw cheering the loudest whilst the first year quickly walked off the stage, walking towards the blue coloured house and joined their table.
And so, the cycle repeated over and over until there was only was student left. A girl with blonde hair and freckles littered her face.
"Hufflepuff!"
The house with a badger adorned as their logo quickly cheered on, clapping their hands to welcome one final member joining their house.
Soon, the once empty plates before her were filled to the brim with various tons of food enough to feed the whole city of London, Caelum not wasting a moment and started to dig right into the food, filling his plate with a turkey leg, mashed potatoes, and even another piece of turkey.
She slightly let out an amused laugh at her friend's state— one being of eating messily and greedily as if he was starved for days. But knowing his family to be terrible, it wouldn't surprise her if that was the case, causing her smile to falter.
She started digging in, refilling her plate until she was satisfied with her fill, casually sipping her drink and waiting for the dessert to appear.
She slightly glanced back at Caelum, eyes almost popping out of their sockets upon seeing the food stacked on top of each other on his plate.
"One may have thought you grew up in a poor family," she joked, earning a muffled chuckled from her friend since he had food completely filled in his mouth, causing him to suddenly choke on his food. Nyx's eyes widened before quickly intervening and saving him from a near death situation just in time by patting his back harshly.
Caelum thanked her whilst she made a mental note to not make jokes around him while he was eating.
Dessert was finally served— pudding, ice cream, brownies, you name it.
Nyx only had one piece of brownie before carefully setting her utensils down— full.
However, as if her best friend had infinite food storage, he continuously continued to eat his fill. Pudding after pudding, then another scoop of ice cream, then another pudding— it went on loop forever.
How did he manage to keep eating???
To her relief, the feast finally vanished, all the food that was left on Caelum's plate gone with the rest, earning a disgruntled groan from her friend.
The headmaster; professor Armando Dippet rose from where he was seated, giving a warm welcome to the first years and the old students, wishing them a happy semester before dismissing them all to bed.
The sound of benches scraping the floor could be heard, students rising up from their seats to follow their house prefects to the common room. Nyx and Caelum were quick to follow, trailing after the many Slytherins, heading towards the cold and dingy dungeons where their common room was.
The journey was rather loud but comfortable, mostly first years chattering amongst themselves in excited tones and clearly looking forward for the next day. Nyx slightly smiled, recalling the first time she herself stepped onto the Hogwarts' grounds.
Although everything about the school was all too thrilling, nothing could've prepared her for the mount of load work dropped onto her like a bomb. Assignments and assignments would pile up almost instantly during the first few weeks, causing stress and little time to admire the different aspects of the school. Due to this life lesson, she had learned to finish her assignments as quickly as possible once assigned.
Finally stopped by a blank cobblestone wall in the dungeons, the boy prefect; Tom Riddle, charming, good looking, top of his classes, and an old acquaintance of hers spoke the password to the common rooms loud and clear for all the students surrounding him to hear.
"Salazar," he announced in a clear tone.
Suddenly, the once blank wall now had a large dark wooden door, its silver knocker glimmering in the dark.
Riddle pulled the knocker, revealing a large gloomy room behind the door. He entered, quickly followed by the rest of the house.
Nyx took in her surroundings, letting out an exhale upon gazing the familiar room she had become accustomed to.
Some of the older students made their way to their respective dormitories, leaving behind the first years to listen to the instructions given out by Riddle. Nyx was one of them, not wanting to hang around for long. She bid her best friend a good-night before making her way up the stairs, opening the door to her dorm.
Not sparing her two roommates a glance, she quickly changed out of her school robes and into her nightwear with a wave of her wand before plopping down exhaustedly onto her soft bed.
She heard soft voices speaking in hushed tones, presumably her roommates conversing in conversation silently not to wake her up, before she slowly drifted off to sleep, eyes fluttering shut.
