Hawks was dreading the moment he would get a specific phone call from his boss, but to his suprise the time passed until 1AM with no sign of anything. He should have been asleep already but the thought of possible unemployment had kept him up.
I should get some sleep, just because he didn't fire me today doesn't mean he won't tomorrow.
So he tried his best to calm his nerves and finally went to bed, just to get a few whacky hours of sleep. The sun hit him at exactly 12PM and pulled him out of his peaceful slumber, it wasn't even time for work yet. He had woken up an hour before his alarm was supposed to go off.
Why, why does the sun keep rising?
He tried to go back to his dreams but to no avail, his apartment was too bright now. With a yawn he rolled to his side and checked his phone, realizing he had a missed call from an unknown number.
Weird, I didn't hear anything? He must have been sleeping like a rock. Now wide awake he hit the call button and threw himself on his back, squishing his wings beneath himself but not giving a shit.
A familiar voice echoed through his room, matching the sunshine falling into his apartment.
"Hawks, boss just told me no one has put in a complaint about you! Oh and sorry if I woke you up." he could tell how excited Mirko was and now he also fully relaxed, like a heavy burden was lifted off his shoulders. He sighed "Lucky me, I do think he just didn't want to tell his daddy I embarrassed him though." his lips curved into a devious grin.
Looks like I get to keep my job eh?
They shared a quick laugh and while the conversation went on, he got ready for the day even though he still had time. "So, how about you get here an hour earlier and we take a swim together bird guy." Mirko suggested and it truly wasn't a bad idea, what was he supposed to do for the time being anyway?
"Hell yeah, count me in. I just woke up but I'm bored already." he responded and wandered around his place, still in the process of waking up. They shared a few more words and hung up shortly after.
With a happy smile he brushed his teeth, did his hair and picked out an outfit which would hopefully make this hot weather bearable. He ended up wearing black shorts and a tanktop, it was common sense that black actually gets warmer than white as it absorbs sunlight but Hawks would never be caught dead in an all white outfit.
In the end he packed his work bag and took the elevator down like any other person would do.
Actually, when was the last time he freely soared through the sky? He ran his hand through his hair as his feet carried himself to the bus stop on autopilot. His gaze was set on the few clouds as he fought against the instinct to just spread his wings and rise into the air. He did that as a child often but now as an adult, he would receive fines for using his quirk in public.
Apparently it was distracting and letting him fly as he wishes would be unfair to others who are not allowed to use their quirk either.
I get it, a little.
Hawks held his hand above his eyes to shield them from the sun, he could barely see the screen where his bus should appear soon. He waited and waited only for the bus to be canceled last minute.
The bird man huffed in annoyance and thought about just flying to work again, however the fine was not worth it. He was in his second day of work, he couldn't afford to pay off more then he needed to. So, just like anyone else he walked to the pool.
Walking to work will only take me like what, twenty minutes? That's basically nothing.
Unusally enthusiastic he threw the bag over his shoulder and strolled through the streets of his neighborhood, music in his right ear and the sun in his eyes. Not being in a hurry felt good.
Everything was peace and quiet for a moment, but sadly, not for long.
The relaxing ambiente was disturbed by a car pulling up to his side and slowing down for a red light. Hawks was surprised to see a deep red sports car with an open roof, showing three teenagers sitting inside and drinking.
Yes, drinking. Even the driver.
He scanned their faces suspiciously but every single one of them was a stranger to him, so why care?
He tried to walk faster but the driver just howled his motor at him, yelling "Ey bird man, you're not a hero eh?" and Hawks could hear him slurring. Should he do something? Probably, but he had no interest in enforcing the law on some stupid kids. So he just ignored them again and walked off.
Really, they won't cause any trouble right? They're harmless.
Those were his thoughts as the red light turned green and the kid on the steering wheel hit the gas, Hawks had a bad feeling. His stomach turned at the thought of something happening so he sent his own feathers after them. They could prevent a possible disaster just in case.
He's been living in this area a while and he knew about the sudden turn ahead of them.
Then, just like he predicted, the car drove towards the turn with maximum speed and slightly hit a car into the side before losing control. The blonde cursed under his breath and tried to focus on his feathers.
Fuck, can i even do something? Am I allowed to?
He watched as the car started swerving and then decided he had to intervene, anything. Everything went so fast, yet he managed to pull every one of them out of the vehicle before it crashed into a pole. All he had to do was sent out his feathers, grab them by a piece of clothing and pull.
The sound of the crash woke the whole neighborhood and passerby gathered in shock.
Wow, i can't believe I made it. Almost like last time back then.
Hawks dropped the three teenagers onto the ground who were basically crying already. They looked no older than seventeen and they smelled like straight booze. He held his anger in and crossed his arms, ready to give them an earful when a big figure approached him from behind. His wings knew before he did so he turned around.
It was no other than the current number one hero Endeavor towering over him.
Hawks was at a loss for words, he just stood there when the hero walked past him and observed the teenagers. Wait, is this really Endeavor in front of me? Wow, I never thought I'd see him in person.
The big angry flames the hero carried around really left a memorable first impression on him. He wanted to say something but Endeavor basically ignored him. Well, his arrogance was well known and Hawks wasn't too surprised. This sort of behavior was one of the reasons he didn't support the number one anymore.
"You kids are going straight to the police station, you're lucky it wasn't me who caught you."
Endeavor said, now finally turning to the person who had been even faster than himself. Not only was he impressed but also curious. But he would never say it, it was his job to put hero playing passerby into their place.
"You're aware this could have gone incredibly wrong, right?" his voice was so loud and firm, it gave Hawks literal chills. Ah, how do I respectfully respond? Hmm.
Hawks tilted his head in faked confusion, answering "Well, I wouldn't have needed to help if you'd been a little faster?" and he couldn't have picked a worse response. He couldn't help it! Being polite and everything wasn't his thing.
He watched as the heros fire doubled in size for a moment.
I think I should have kept my mouth shut this time.
