˗ˏˋ 🐍'ˎ˗

It was Y/N Riddle's first year at Hogwarts, the school famous for teaching many famous wizards and witches. She was already halfway through the school year, and she was starting to fit in really well. However, Y/n was getting extremely frustrated trying to explain to everyone why she had the last name Riddle instead of Howard — her adoptive parents' last names.

The irritation she felt every time she had to clarify her story over and over again was slowly driving her to insanity. She had the words memorized already. "I wanted to feel connected to my biological family in a way, even if it isn't through actually speaking to them."

That usually led to the same question. "You had a choice?"  They'd usually ask, and she had to hold back her groan every time she had to answer that question, too. She had just gotten adopted last year, so she could fully voice her wanting to keep her surname the same.

What she usually didn't say was that one day, she secretly hoped that one of her family members would notice her and her last name, and make the connection. That they'd whisk her away to meet her biological family.

Y/N wasn't saying her adoptive family was horrible. No, Ariella and Finley Howard were anything but horrible, or anything negative in general. She loved them, and was truly grateful they had adopted her. But, the same silly fantasy had always replayed into her head the moment she turned eight.

They'd — preferably her mother or father — would work at the Ministry alongside her adoptive dad, and would plan a nice dinner. They'd arrive at the house, and she'd be in one of her favorite dresses, the resemblance toward her mother somewhat there. They would see the similarities between the three of them, and started to suspect.

When they finally ask for her name, they would put two and two together, finally claim her as their daughter.

That delusion was her personal favorite.

Despite all her silly little dreams, Y/N was doing great at Hogwarts. She got into Gryffindor, and her parents were more than proud of her. She became great friends with Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter, usually hanging out with them in her free time. Y/N was usually quiet though, keeping to herself when she wasn't around her friends.

One day, she decided to go to the library at night, since she had forgotten to get a book that she really needed to study for her exam the next day. After putting on her slippers to exit the dorm, she softly shook Hermione to tell her about her whereabouts.

"Mione?" Y/N whispered, delicately tapping her shoulder. Hermione turned to the other side of the bed to face Y/N, her eyes not open. "Hm?" She mumbled, slightly squinting her eyes.

"I'm going to the library to study for the exam tomorrow. I just thought I'd let you know, in case you wake up and wonder where I am." Y/N explains, crouching down so Hermione could properly hear her. Hermione turns the other way, before speaking aloud. "Alright. Just- be careful and be safe." Hermione murmured.
