Aunt Rose welcomed Evelyn with open arms. Her cottage was filled with the scent of lavender and old books, a comforting mix that made Evelyn feel at home.

"Aunt Rose, do you know anything about a man named James who wrote to Grandma Clara during the war?" Evelyn asked as they sat down for tea.

Aunt Rose's eyes softened. "Ah, James. He was Clara's first love. They met just before he was sent off to fight. She was heartbroken when she learned he was missing in action. For years, she hoped he would return, but he never did."

Evelyn showed her the letter. "I found this in the attic. Do you know what happened to him?"

Aunt Rose took the letter, her hands trembling slightly. "After the war, Clara received news that James had been captured and sent to a POW camp. He never made it back. She kept this letter as a memory of him."

Evelyn felt a lump in her throat. "Why didn't she ever talk about him?"

"Your grandmother loved your grandfather very much, but James was her first love. She didn't want to dwell on the past. It was too painful."
