"Aap dono ko idea bhi hai ki aapne kya Kiya hai?" Amar's voice was grave and serious, as he let the question hang in the air.
Meethi and Deep gulped sharply. They were standing in the dean's office, their faces not meeting Amar's while he sat at his desk, his eyes piercing into their souls. While the two had been mighty thrilled with the success of their prank at first, once the initial mirth had worn off, they couldn't help but feel they had gone a tad bit too far this time and now standing in front of Amar himself, they had begun to feel incredibly guilty and now Meethi's annoyance at her father had long since worn off, her common sense had finally shone through and she had started to regret her actions.
"You not only disrupted the class but you also disrespected my authority as your teacher." Amar said gravely. The two stared at each other in surprise. Disrespecting Amar had never been their intention, annoying him, yes, but not disrespecting him. It just hadn't occurred to them that their actions would inevitably mean just this.
They opened their mouths to apologise but Amar raised his hand to silence them. "Don't talk yet, you will get your chance.Let me finish first. Aap dono ne past mein bhi bohot se masto mazak kiye hain, apne friends pe, college fests mein etc, and while you were reprimanded for those, you got away with little more than a slap on the wrist and that is because, while being your professor, aapko discipline karna hamari duty hai, but we too realise that thoda bohot Masti mazak college life ka part hi hai. But what you did today wasn't a simple joke, it was blatant disregard for the authority of your professor. Apne meri hi presence mein mere class mein class and ek bohot important test disturb Kiya, as if you have no regard for the fact that aapke teacher wahi present hain. Not only that,
apne Vinayak ko daraya. Aap jaante hain ki woh pehle hi dissection se bohot darta hai. Aise apne na kewal indirectly uski weakness ko mock Kiya, balki uske liye apne dar pe kabu paana aur bhi difficult bana diya. Not to mention, aapke prank ki vajah se class mein bhagdad mach gayi jisme ki kuch logon ko chot bhi lag gayi including myself however more people could easily have become much more seriously injured. You put many of your classmates in danger."Amar's voice was quiet but his words cut through them like a sharp knife. It was only now that they were realising the true implications of their actions. They were so ashamed that they couldn't even get any apologies out of their mouths. As if sensing their feelings, Amar spoke again " I do understand that apki intention yeh nahi thi but your actions have spoken otherwise and this can't be ignored. You both are good students and I do expect much better from you."
"Yes Sir. We are very sorry." They apologised after somehow finding their voice again.
"Indeed you are. However as consequences for your actions, whatever assignment submissions you have due for the next two weeks in all your subjects will instead have to be submitted in the next three days only." Amar said.
That was a lot. They had a lot of important assignment submissions due in the next two weeks, but they didn't dare protest. They did deserve this after all.
"I also expect you to apologise publically to the entire class for wasting their time and personally to Vinayak afterwards." Amar continued.
"Yes sir" both said in unison.
"Dismissed" Said Amar.
Deep left but Meethi suddenly remembered something so she quickly said
" Sir, aaj Friday hai. Teen din baad Monday hai aur Sunday ko medical camp start hai. That will go on till Wednesday so mein apne assignments Monday ko submit kaise karungi?" She was hoping her father could make an exception and didn't bar her from attending the camp altogether.Thankfully he said, " koi baat nahi, submit it to me immediately after the camp."
"Okay Sir." Meethi said, relieved. The extended deadline didn't mean anything as she would be too busy during the camp to work on any assignments so she would have to finish them on Sunday only before leaving for the camp but at least she wouldn't have to miss it altogether just to be present in college to submit it on Monday.
Seeing that they were alone, Meethi softened her voice and said "sorry Baba."
She had already apologised to her professor but she needed to apologise to her father too to get rid of her guilt."Koi baat nahi Meethi. Tumhe apni galti samajh aa gayi, mere liye wahi bohot hai."
Amar said, understanding her unspoken thoughts."Waise bhi mein college ki baat college mein hi rehti hai. Mein college ki baat Ghar Tak nahin le kar jaata aur na hi Ghar ke baaton ka asar humare professional interaction per parne deta hu. Humari professor student relationship ka impact humari father daughter relationship per nahi parta." Amar said not unkindly.
"And I hope you maintain the same. As someone entering the medical profession, it is very important that you learn to keep your personal and professional lives separate and learn to keep your emotions separate from your work life." he said quite firmly looking straight into Meethi's eyes.
Meethi felt very embarrassed and childish in this moment. Her father had rightly understood her motives behind the action and addressed them too without directly pointing it out. She vowed never to mix her personal conflicts into her college life again.
"Ji Baba. I understand" she said and Amar saw that she had understood the unsaid implications of his words and learnt from them too. He smiled at her and said " Jao, tumhari next class ka time hoga thodi der mein" and Meethi left after nodding.
Later Deep and her apologised to the entire class as well as Vinayak. Their classmates were obviously not at all upset at the class being interrupted and most even thanked them for it. Vinayak too was a good sport about it and said that he too had found it hilarious once the initial shock had worn off so there was no permanent damage done.
