Most everybody hated the C.P.A, which stands for the Citizen Protection Agency. What they were was an association developed for the protection of people, sort of like the police, except they had more resources, more money, and they were more cruel. They did serve their purpose well, that is, until degree 1024 happened, which gave them as much power as they wanted, this meant that if they caught someone doing anything illegal, no matter how small the offense, they could beat, or even kill you. When people don't like laws, or rules, they seem to always blame the enforcers of those said laws. But for people like me, Rowan Paige, that is, the type of people who follow laws, the average citizen, the person you don't notice or give a second thought to, we have a pretty good relationship with them, in fact, my closest friend, at the time, was an enforcer.
I should probably describe myself. My name, in case you didn't catch it, is Rowan Paige. I am average height, average looks, in fact, I'm the most average person ever, or so everyone told me before... the thing happened. Anyways, on this day, I was heading to my job as a surgeon. Whilst my looks may be exceedingly average, my mind is not. I was walking, since I lived only a quick walk from the hospital to my job.
The thing about New Born city, which is where almost everyone lives, since it's the biggest city in history, is that even though it is huge, and so many people live there, it's almost like Coruscant from Star Wars, huge, ginormous, but the less popular sections are very... messy, and I lived in a very not well known area. I was walking to my job, with my headphones on, listening to Matt Bellamy absolutely destroying his voice on Yes Please, when I noticed that the usual road that I walked was blocked off by a bunch of rioters, since I had absolutely no intention of dealing with them and their... cursed flyers, I decided to take a little detour instead.
Little did I know, but that decision changed the world to come.
I went left, instead of right, which was my usual path, to an area that I've only been to thrice before, due to the fact that that part of town was always exceedingly busy. Except for that day, which for some reason, was dead, except for a single C.P.A. outpost
"State your business" said one of the people, probably the head of that particular outpost.
"Just passing through" I responded, pulling out my registrations.
"Why not take the faster path?"
"Eh, there were a bunch of rioters, and I didn't feel like dealing with their things.
"Understood"
"There sure does seem to be a lot of them around lately"
"It's honestly quite annoying to deal with"
"Especially the ones with animal masks, they don't seem to budge for anything"
"Ugh, ain't that the truth"
"Do you hear that?"
I heard a ticking noise.
"Hear what?" The officer asked
"There's a ticking noise"
"Huh... could just be my watch, it's pretty loud"
"Hmm... maybe, weird"
"Although, now that you do mention it, I do hear... something"
I saw a hooded figure dart around out of the corner of my eye.
"Did you see that?" I asked
"Huh, weird, probably just Franklin pulling a prank on me"
I heard the ticking noise stop, and heard a click.
"That can't be good, that can't be good at all." I said.
And then something exploded, and I was blasted back, hitting my head on a wall, which knocked me out cold.
When I became conscious, I was in a great amount of pain, and I wasn't quite in my senses yet.
There were rioters, all with animal masks, surrounding me.
"-A bystander who was simply put in the wrong place at the wrong time" Said one with a wolf mask.
"I say kill him, that's what I'd do" said one with an ape mask on.
In my delirious state, the person with the ape mask appeared to be an actual ape.
He was.
"Easy, he's done nothing wrong," said one with a bird mask.
"Well I don't really care about what we do with him, as long as I get to mess with him first" said one with a cat mask.
"We are not going to send him on one of your awful chases, I mean, look at him" said the one with a wolf mask.
The one with a cat mask quietly laughed.
"Stop planning, Tommy" said the one with a bird mask.
"Ah, you guys are no fun" said the one with a cat mask.
"So anyways, what are we going to do, I mean we can't just leave him."
"Why not?" said the ape.
"Those are third-degree-burns, Frank. We can't have the hospital take him, since they can't be trusted right now, and we can't take him to base, for obvious reasons.
"Why not? I mean might as well, you know, we do always need more people." Said the one with a wolf mask.
"You know the rules, Peter, we can't ju-" said the one with a bird mask.
"Good thing he's awake then" said the one with a cat mask.
All of their heads turned towards me.
"Well, what do you say, wanna join the revolution?" asked the one with a wolf mask
Alas, if it weren't for my hand, broken in a way that made my thumb stick out, and a sudden itch in my arm, I wouldn't have raised my arm in what appeared to be a thumbs up motion.
I then passed out.
"Alright Frank, carry him back to base" said the one with a bird mask.
