Ichijiku (Tigress)

In an empty house in an empty room on an empty bed, I scroll through my music app and sift through song after song until I've compiled a decent-sized playlist that reminds me of my husband. Thus far, Panic! At the Disco, AJR, and Adam Jensen all exist in harmony in my Deku playlist. Each song auditions and only those invoking his spirit to life in the room with me make the cut.

"Summer has gone and passed,

the innocent can never last.

Wake me up when September ends." Green Day bops through the speakers as I hum along, dragging it over to the playlist profile picture of my favorite green-haired hero.

With a heavy sigh, I rest my head on my hand and glance at the calendar. Only four days have been marked off in September. Izuku doesn't come back until the second of October. I sing louder as I live vicariously through the refrain, wishing desperately to close my eyes and wake up when Izuku is finally home.

While I listen to the remaining songs compiled, I pull up a document and reread over a story I've been putting together as a distraction. I finish reading the most recent paragraph and my fingers fly across the keyboard to continue the scene. A war built on miscommunication and misdirection leads to the death of many leads to the humbling of two kingdoms leads to the dancing of two lovers around a pond. The pitter patter of computer keys slows to a stop as my mind drifts to my Izuku. Man, I wish he was here so I could bounce my ideas off of him. He listens so well and often offers me different perspectives.

Looking at the wall ahead of me, memories project onto the blue surface of sitting in Izuku's lap while he reads over my shoulder. The ghost of a smile tickles my lips as bittersweet thoughts flicker against the wall; images of him whining so I could take a break to eat even makes me shake my head with amusement.

I'd ended up five extra pages of plot before Izuku decided he was calm enough to order dinner.

"Mrow!" Fauna comes barreling into the room with a comforting chirp, immediately seeking my fingers to rub against and knocking me out of my thoughts. "Mrah, mrow?"

"I know I'm out of it, Bean, but I miss him. He's already been gone for a whole month!" I whine, scratching behind her ears.

"Mrow mrow!"

"But, Beeaaaannnnnn..."

"Mrow!"

"...fine."

I ruffle her fur and close my laptop. Stepping over to my bookshelves, I consider my options and go for a favorite, A Monster Calls. Knowing what lies inside the pages, I grab a box of tissues for good measure.

I've binged most of the book and am starting to sniffle when the lock on the door turns and I freeze. Still partially stuck in my bookish fantasy, I wonder fleetingly if a monster will reach his hand through the door.

No weapons lay nearby, so I prepare to use my quirk as the door creaks open.

"Honeydoodle?" Izuku's voice puts the breath back in my lungs.

I jump up from the couch and into his arms the second my eyes lock on his fluffy, green hair.

"Izuku! You're back!" I squeal, squeezing him tight and resolving never to let go as the door shuts behind us. "I thought you weren't supposed to be back until–"

"October. I wasn't, but we were able to take the operation down quicker than expected." His breath tickles my ear as his fingers file through my hair.

I press my forehead against his and soak up his essence. His sculpted figure only gives way to my gentle touches. I find myself lost in the forest in his eyes and his sweet scent of springtime.

"I've missed you so much." He whispers.

"I was just bemoaning your absence." I say way too formally, and then laugh at my own words. "I'm glad you came back early. It's been too long without hearing you ramble about new, upcoming heroes. I feel like I'm out of touch!"

That draws a smile from him until he swings me up into his arms so he can carry me back to our bedroom. Fauna chirps her greeting as she tears down the hall and waits for us on the bedside table.

"Watch out for my laptop." I squeak before he sets me on the soft comforter and turns to give Fauna her much needed attention.

And suddenly, the world clicks back into motion as I'm surrounded by the love of my husband and my cat. Once Fauna has indulged in her share of head pats, she hops off the table and struts away.

"Doing some writing before I returned?" Izuku grins, kissing my cheek. "I've missed hearing you tell me about your stories. How's Aleku doing?"

"He's still trying to save his hometown." I laugh, stroking his soft hair like I've been longing for weeks! I open my computer and remember what I left off on, gasping and gesturing for him to sit on the bed with me. "I forgot! While you were gone, I made a playlist for you. Come, sit and listen."

And for the remainder of the day, I make his earbuds tingle with the songs that bring his essence to life.
