"You're seriously going to wear this to your birthday party?" Jannat says as she looks at Reem, who's wearing a simple yellow outfit with little daisies on it. "And besides, it's a night party. This dress isn't good enough. What happened to your fashion sense, Reem?" she continues, while Reem rolls her eyes. "I like it. It's comfortable. Besides, it's a small party, just us," Reem protests. "And Karan," Jannat reminded her. "Wouldn't you like to look stunning and make him go crazy for you?" she said dramatically. "What do you want me to do, Jannat?" she asked, giving up. Jannat got up, went to her closet, and came back with a black gown. "Here, wear this," she said as she shoved it in her face. "It's just us, friends, no one else, Jannat. Besides, isn't it too much?" she said, holding the dress in front of her. "No, it's not. Besides, it's your birthday," Jannat protested, while everyone else hummed in agreement. "Technically, tomorrow is my birthday. I don't know why Karan insisted on celebrating tonight as well," she said. She looked in the mirror to see if the dress looks good, and damn, it does. "How's things with Dev?" Avu asked Anu, who was staring at her phone, smiling. "Perfect as ever," she replied, finally looking up but with the smile remaining on her face."It's been a month since her and Dev's relationship improved. She's been smiling way too much, and all her friends figured it out before she had a chance to tell them. They were actually really happy for them.
Reem's birthday party started soon, and it was fun. All her friends were there, including Jai. Even though their friendship wasn't as strong as before, they still attended all the gatherings with their friends. Reem wanted to make things better but ended up making them worse. She blamed herself but was too cowardly to admit she was wrong. She cut the cake at 12 and chatted with her friends. When Karan asked her for a moment and gathered everyone's attention, he said, "Okay, everyone, I have something I need to say," and all of them looked at him with curiosity. He took Reem's hand and walked towards the front, where they cut the cake. "What's going on?" Reem whispered, confused."Don't tell me you are asking me to dance. You know I hate dancing when all these people are staring at me," she whispers. He chuckles, "I know," he whispers back. "It's not about a dance," he said as she looked at him, confused. "Then what...," before she could say anything, her eyes widened when she saw him sitting on one knee. "Karan, what are you doing?" she whispered again. "Let me say it. I have been keeping this to myself for so long. Now I need to say it. Honestly, I never wanted to meet you. When mom told me about you, I told her that I don't want her to set me up with someone. I'm a grown-up man. I can do this myself,....." he said, chuckling while his hands were sweating, with everyone staring at him and Reem looking so confused. He had decided to do this alone, just like he had decided to have dinner with her alone today. However, her friends told him that they were thinking of surprising Reem with a party. It was Jannat's idea to tell her that he planned it all, when he didn't. So now, he was proposing because tomorrow was the big birthday party, and he thought he would announce it then if Reem said yes. ".....but when I met you, it was beautiful. You were beautiful in a way that made me want to see you again. I wanted to meet you again and again, and I realized that you were the one. We've been dating for months, and believe me, they are the best days of my life. I love you, Reem. I really do, and you know that. But what you should know now is that I want to spend my life with you. I want to be with someone who makes me want to be the best version of myself, who makes me feel that I would have everything if I just hold on to you. And that's what I have planned to do, so..." He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. "Will you marry me?" It wasn't just him or Reem who was holding their breaths; everyone was. Reem looked at him with tears in her eyes, but the tears weren't for the proposal (which was perfect, by the way). It was for her, for the future she chose for herself or will choose. She knew she had messed up a long time ago, but she didn't have it in herself to admit that she was wrong. And now, when she did accomplish what she wanted, where is the feeling of satisfaction? It's not there because what she thought would make her happy only made her miserable. She looks at the ceiling, then at her left side, and catches the eyes of the person she wanted to make miserable, but ended up being that herself. But when he looked into her eyes, there it was - the pain, the hurt, the regret - everything she felt was there in his eyes. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and then looks at Karan again, who was still sitting in front of her on one knee. "yes" she whispers his eyes widen and a grin appeared on his face he slid the ring on her finger got up and hugged her she smiles and hugged him back but when she looks at her left again a pair of dark brown eyes stare at her with so much pain she was surprised his eyes didn't burst out at that moment he looked down took a deep breath looked back at her with a bitter smile and left the room a new pain slash through her body and this time it cut deeper then before.
