Cassandra's surprise morphed into a look of pure relief that washed over her face like a tidal wave. Before Varian could react, she lunged forward, engulfing him in a tight hug. The air whooshed out of his lungs, the unexpected warmth momentarily sending a jolt through him. It had been years since he'd felt her touch, and a bittersweet pang of nostalgia struck him.
He hesitantly returned the hug, his arms awkwardly wrapping around her back. The familiar scent of lavender and leather, a scent he'd unknowingly missed, filled his senses. But the moment, charged with unspoken emotions, was fleeting.
Cassandra pulled away abruptly, her face flushed. "Varian," she breathed, her voice trembling slightly. "You... you grew up."
Varian blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by the shift. He looked down at himself, his hand brushing against the worn leather of his backpack. It was true. Gone were the gangly limbs and awkward demeanor of his childhood. Years of adventuring, of facing challenges and forging his own path, had etched lines onto his face and a steely glint in his eyes.
"Well," he stammered, a nervous chuckle escaping his lips. "It's been a while. A lot's happened since..." he trailed off, his mind flashing back to the tumultuous events that had driven a wedge between them.
Cassandra's expression hardened. "Let's just say," she said, her voice regaining its usual sharp edge, "your timing couldn't be worse."
The warmth that had momentarily flickered between them vanished, replaced by a familiar tension. Varian felt a pang of disappointment, but it was quickly overshadowed by a surge of determination. He had come a long way, and he wouldn't let a frosty reception deter him from his mission.
"Maybe," he countered, his voice firm. "But maybe it's exactly the right time. I'm here to help, Cassandra. To help you, to help Arendelle."
Cassandra studied him for a long moment, her gaze searching his face. He could see the war raging within her, the conflict between loyalty to the kingdom and a flicker of the old camaraderie they once shared.
"Help?" she finally asked, a hint of skepticism lacing her voice. "With what, exactly?"

"With the Moonstone, of course," Varian replied, his voice firm despite the prickle of unease that snaked down his spine. Cassandra's guarded demeanor was putting him on edge, but he wouldn't back down now.
"The Moonstone?" Cassandra echoed, her voice laced with disbelief. "How do you even know about that?"
Varian explained, keeping his voice calm and informative. "Queen Rapunzel sent me. She's been researching the Moonstone's influence, and she believes my knowledge of alchemy might be useful. Apparently, you... reached out to her." He left the last part hanging, unsure of how much Cassandra was willing to reveal.
A flicker of surprise crossed Cassandra's face, quickly replaced by a steely determination. "So, you're here to poke around in our affairs?" she said, her voice cool. "Is that it?"
Varian bristled slightly. "No," he countered. "I'm here to help. I've been studying the Moonstone for a while now, its properties, its potential... weaknesses."
He saw a flicker of interest in her eyes, a spark of hope battling with her inherent suspicion. It was a gamble, revealing his research, but he had a feeling it might be the key to gaining her trust.
"I believe the royal library here holds ancient texts about the Moonstone," he continued. "With your permission, I'd like to take a look. Maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to counter its influence, to break its hold on Arendelle."
Cassandra remained silent for a long moment, her gaze fixed on him. He could almost hear the gears turning in her mind, weighing the options, the risks. Finally, she sighed, a hint of resignation in her voice.
