The outskirts of the village materialized gradually, a cluster of quaint houses with smoke curling from their chimneys. Relief washed over Varian, a wave that surprised him in its intensity. The past few days had been a blur of treacherous terrain, near-disasters, and a simmering tension that hung heavy between him and Emma. The prospect of civilization, of a warm meal and a bed that didn't require contortions to fit into, was more appealing than he cared to admit.

As they approached the village gate, a weathered guard emerged, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He eyed Varian and Emma with suspicion, his gaze lingering on the worn satchel strapped to Zephyr's back and the strange staff strapped to Varian's back.

"Halt!" he barked, his voice gruff. "State your business."

Varian dismounted, a smile plastered on his face. "Greetings, good sir," he said, his voice brimming with false cheer. "We are weary travelers, simply passing through your fair village. Might we inquire about a place to rest and replenish our supplies?"

The guard's eyes narrowed, his skepticism far from gone. "Travelers, are you? Where do you hail from, and where are you headed?"

Emma, ever the Captain, took control of the conversation. Her voice was firm, devoid of Varian's forced pleasantries. "We are on a mission of utmost importance," she declared, her gaze unflinchingly meeting the guard's. "We carry the King's seal as proof of our authority. May we have an audience with your village leader?"

The guard's gaze flickered to the small, worn royal signet ring Emma produced from her pocket. A flicker of recognition crossed his face. He hesitated for a moment, then stepped aside, his gruff demeanor softening slightly.

"Welcome to Blackwood, travelers," he rumbled. "Mayor Thornbury will see you now. Follow me."

Varian remounted Zephyr, a mischievous glint in his eyes. Playing the part of a royal envoy wasn't exactly his forte, but with Emma by his side, he was confident they could handle whatever challenges this village threw their way.

They rode through the village, the cobblestone streets bustling with activity. Villagers stared at them with a mixture of curiosity and suspicion. Varian couldn't help but notice the worried frowns on some faces, a stark contrast to the jovial greetings they received in Corona. This village held a secret, a worry that gnawed at its inhabitants.

As they followed the guard, Varian found himself stealing glances at Emma. There was a steely glint in her eyes, a hint of determination that mirrored his own. They were partners in this, their shared sense of purpose and unspoken connection forming a silent bond.

They arrived at a large wooden building, the village hall judging by the emblem carved above the door. The guard ushered them inside, where a gruff-looking man with a worried expression awaited them.

"Mayor Thornbury," the guard announced, "these travelers claim to have the King's seal."

The Mayor's gaze fell on the signet ring clutched in Emma's hand. He studied it for a moment, then sighed heavily. "Very well," he muttered. "Let them speak their piece."

Varian dismounted once more, a plan already forming in his mind. He looked at Emma, a silent communication passing between them. This wasn't just about rest and supplies anymore. They had stumbled upon a village in distress, and with the Star Drop pulsating faintly inside him, Varian knew they couldn't turn a blind eye.

He took a deep breath, a determined glint in his eyes. "Mayor Thornbury," he began, his voice surprisingly steady, "we may be travelers, but we are also problem solvers. Tell us what troubles your village, and we will do everything in our power to help."
