AFTER A MORNING OF FIGHTING STORM SPIRITS WITH HIS NEWLY DISCOVERED WEAPON, goat men, and learning he can fly, Jason should've been losing his mind. Instead, all he felt was confused.

The bald guy—Butch, as he introduced himself, handled the reins, and the girl who had recognized Irene—Annabeth, adjusted a bronze navigation device.

They rose over the Grand Canyon and headed east, icy wind ripping straight through Jason's jacket. Behind them, more storm clouds were gathering.
The chariot lurched and bumped. it had no seat belts and the back was wide open, so Jason wondered if he could just fly his way out if he happened to fall out.

He didn't want to find out.

That had been the most disturbing part of the morning, learning he could control the winds—other than Irene.

He wasn't the only one who woke up on a bus with no memories. Irene did too, and the only thing he was certain of was that he knew her.

Irene stood right next to him. Everything about her made Jason feel like sparks of electricity were dancing along his spine

From the way her brilliant sea-green eyes stared in thought into the sky—like she could be thinking a million things, to the way her raven hair flowed in waves around her, her smooth tanned skin looked like she had just finished a day at the beach. Everything about her made Jason feel warm inside.

And she just stood there, completely oblivious to the fact Jason was going insane because of her.

Meanwhile, Leo was being annoying, as usual. "This is so cool!" He spit a pegasus feather out of his mouth. "Where are we going?"

"A safe place," Annabeth said. "The only safe place for kids like us. Camp Half-Blood."

"Half-Blood?" Piper was immediately on guard. Jason wondered if it had something to do with bullies. He had only known her for a day but the way she had gotten name called at the museum, he could only guess. "Is that some kind of bad joke?"

"She means we're demigods," Jason explained, though he didn't know why he did. The words just flew out of his mouth naturally. "Half god, half mortal."

Annabeth looked back. She had gone back to her cold demeanor, but there was still a bit of uneasiness. "You seem to know a lot, Jason, But, yes, demigods. My mom is Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Butch here is the son of Iris, the rainbow goddess."

Leo choked. "Your mom is a rainbow goddess?"

"Got a problem with that?" Butch said.

"No, no," Leo said. "Rainbows. Very macho."

"Butch is our best equestrian," Annabeth said. '"He gets along great with the pegasi like..." she turned to Irene. "Never mind," she said quietly.

"Rainbow ponies," Leo muttered.

I'm gonna toss you off this chariot," Butch warned.

"Demigods," Piper said. "You mean you think you're... you think we're—"

"Something's wrong," Irene said finally speaking and looking carefully at the pegasus like she was reading a book. "The pegasus, they're saying something is happening something—"
