Echo is sitting with her lunch thinking about the days events and looking
down at a book she has to study, the spotlights go again
ECHO: (to audience) You know Dianne and Nick were really nice (pauses to think) Dianne was really nice when I first met them but lately I feel like they both are trying to take control of the way I think that's not fair it's my brain I should control them right? But they seem so mature and they talk down to me like I'm a kid, that's not fair either I'm no kid
Dianne walks in after as Echo is talking
DIANNE: Hey sweetie
ECHO: (surprise) H-hey Dianne, you freaked me out a little, w-what's up, actually there's something I wanted to talk to yo-
DIANNE: Yes yes of course but before I forget you need to focus
ECHO: (confused) What?
DIANNE: You have to stay focused, look down at your book and study, study, study, study
ECHO: (sighs and looks down) But it's hard to study and stay focused, my brain hurts, i'm going to get up for 2 seconds and...
DIANNE: But if you don't focus it won't get done
ECHO: It will get done. I just need some water and...
DIANNE: NO, YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO MOVE
ECHO(mad): YES, I AM, YOU DON'T CONTROL ME
DIANNE (angry): YES I DO
ECHO: I DON'T CARE, YOU SHOULDN'T CONTROL ME
They turn away from each other as Nick walks in and sits on the other side
of Echo
NICK: You know if you don't focus then you won't pass your test tomorrow, and are you sure this is what you need to be studying and is that the best highlighter to use, are you sure you will remember this tomorrow. And what else do you need to do tonight to be ready, did you remember to finish your other homework, it's getting late and if you don't finish it people will get mad at you, and did you remember to eat when's the last time you drank water?
Echo is listening to everything NICK is saying and starting to think about it
all and sits there with her hands through her hair looking stressed and
worried, DIANNE turns back and looks at NICK with anger
DIANNE: WHAT, are you doing?!?!
NICK: Just giving the kid a rest from hyperfocusing, that's my job right? Look now she's under my control
DIANNE: Not if I have anything to say about it
Dianne looks at Echo
DIANNE: Hey, Hey, I'm sorry for yelling at you. Can you please listen to me and get back to work? We need to finish. Please listen to me. I'm the good guy.
NICK (angry): You're the Good guy?!? What does that make me then?!?
DIANNE: Well obviously the bad guy, i mean look at you, ALL you do is cause no good stress
NICK: And what about you?!? YOU'RE no angel!! Because of you the poor kid hasn't had a rest
DIANNE: SHE CAN EAT WHEN SHE'S DONE WORK
NICK: THERE'S ALWAYS GOING TO BE WORK TO DO
DIANNE: I'M GOING TO TAKE CONTROL OF HER AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
NICK: NO I AM, I WANNA BE MORE POWERFUL THAN YOU, GET LOST SHE'S GOING TO BE UNDER MY CONTROL
Echo is looking between them while getting more and more angry
ECHO: CAN BOTH OF YOU JUST SHUT UP
Dianne and Nick stop fighting and look at each other and then at Echo
DIANNE: Honey what did you just..
ECHO (looks at DIANNE): I TOLD YOU TO SHUT UP, you think i'm just some THING to take control off
Nick giggles and Echo turns to Nick
ECHO: AND YOU'RE NO BETTER, you're just causing me stress for no reason, (turns to DIANNE) just because you two helped me out and where nice when we first met does NOT mean i'm going to fall under your control, I don't need to listen to either of you, YOU GUYS need to listen to me. We are inside MY BRAIN, you guys are apart of me you're not controlling me.
DIANNE: (nervous) B-but you can't just get rid of us like you said we are apart of you
NICK: Yeah kid what are you going to do
Echo takes a breath and stares at Nick and Dianne, she goes to sit each of
them down
ECHO: Listen very closely you guys are strong and it was easy for you to take over my train of thoughts but I'm going to learn to keep you two under control you can fight and argue all you want but sooner or later I will learn to tune the bad out and live my life
Nick and Dianne look confused
DIANNE: So.... That's it?
ECHO: Yes oh almost forgot as punishment you guys will be stuck with each other for as long as I live, my brain my rules
Nick and Dianne look at each other and start to beg Echo to change the
punishment but Echo snaps her figures as the spotlight leave and she is
sitting happily in the lunchroom and pulls out her computer
ECHO: (typing on the computer) What helps with ADHD and anxiety
