I woke up to the sound of rushing water and the feeling of wet clothes sticking to my skin. My heart beats violently against my chest as I open my eyes and take in my surroundings. I'm on a small raft in the middle of a vast ocean.
I try not to panic, but I'm unable to stop myself from screaming for help. What am I doing here?
I try to rethink my steps, but nothing makes sense. Lately, I've been experiencing odd incidents.
Some time ago I was working on homework and I picked up a pencil to write down a question, but it suddenly disappeared right out of my hand. And when I was curling my hair, I physically saw the curling iron disappear before reappearing back in my hand, causing a painful burn and blister.
I thought that maybe I was developing my powers, but I didn't want to tell my parents and get their hopes up, leaving them disappointed if I didn't get my abilities. I'm already a late bloomer, being 17 with no powers.
Maybe if I imagine being in my room, I'll teleport back. I concluded after a few minutes of thinking. I tightly squeezed my eyes and began to imagine my bedroom. A fuzzy feeling washes over me, and the sound of raging waves becomes faint.
I slowly peel my eyes open and take in the beautiful sight of my bedroom. I let out a sign of relief, lifted my hand, and placed it on my beating chest. My pink comforter is soaking wet, and even though I didn't want my parents to know, it's time. I don't want any more incidents to happen without them knowing.
Just as I reach for the door knob, the door is pulled opened to reveal my mother on her glittery pink flip phone. She pauses her conversation as she takes in my appearance.
"What happened to you?" She asks in surprise as she lowers her phone from her ear. "You messed up your silk press!" Her hand brushes over my now frizzy hair, and she gently caresses my face.
"I need to talk with you and dad." The slightly amused expression on her face drops in seconds as she takes in my words.
"Okay, I'll get your father." She rushes out of my room, and I hurriedly change into some dry clothes.
"Please tell me that this is important and that you're not wasting my time." My dad walks in behind my mother, looking down at his tie, fixing any imperfections. He pauses his movement as he takes in my appearance.
"What the he-"
"I think I got my powers," I interrupt him, getting straight to the point.
Both of their eyebrows rose in surprise. My dad looks ecstatic and starts to rapidly shoot out questions.
"Hydrokinesis?"
"No"
"Waterbending like your uncle Ron?"
"No, dad, it-"
"Self-duplication like your mother and Penny?"
"Dad-" I let out an exasperated sign, but he shoots out another question.
"Super strength?"
After a minute of silence, I speak , "I think that it's teleportation."
A giant grin breaks across his face as he pulls me into a tight hug, I swear I feel a rib break.
"Marcus, get off the girl." My mother pulls him away before overwhelming my face with kisses. "Momm!" I drag out the word and slightly wipe off her sloppy kisses.
Penny steps into my room, confused and a bit irritated from all the noise. "What's going on?"
"Paula got her powers. My two beautiful daughters are going to be superheroes," he pulls me and Penny in a hug, lifting us both off the floor.
"No way!" Penny says it with a soft smile on her lips. "What's your ability?"
"Teleportation!" My father and I announce at the same time.
"Wow, just like dad!" She states excited, pulling me into a hug.
"I need to call Principal Powers. Then I'll have both of my girls in Sky High. Wait, tell Stronghold hears about this!" My father walks out, phone in hand. I am going to be a senior in a few weeks and have never stepped foot in a school because of my parents being superheroes and all.
Superhero Zion and Sidekick Zi are two of the most influential superheroes, maybe second to Mr. and Mrs. Stronghold. My father is known for his ability to teleport both himself and other objects, while my mother has the ability to duplicate herself up to two times.
When they're not saving lives, my mother works as a fashion designer for my father's fashion company, ZS. My parents decided to not hide their identity, which is why I have been homeschooled for the majority of my life, that and the fact that my father can be a bit overbearing and strict.
My mother comes back looking very excited. "I have good news... Principal Powers said she would be delighted for you to join Sky High this school year!" I feel a tinge of excitement about this news, but then my mother opens her mouth again.
"But she mentioned that you'll have to take orientation with the upcoming freshman," Penny snickers as my expression dampens.
"Nevermind," I whisper in horror. Everyone knows that freshmen get picked on, and I don't want to be subjected to it either.
"Oh, baby," my mother chuckles. "Think of it this way. It's only for a day, and you never know, maybe the freshman won't be so bad," she says, wrapping an arm around me and pulling me in a comforting hug.
"You're going, and that's final," my dad expresses as he passes my door with a briefcase in his hand. "Both of my girls are going to attend Sky High!" he whoops.
I drag a hand down my tired face. "Marcus! Not helping!" My mother calls out to him with an irritated look on her face.
