I've decided that the chapters will alternate between modern day and then Bree's childhood. The Bree childhood chapters will normally be be between 1,000-2,000 words and what ever happens in that chapter will relate to the chapter afterwards in modern day. Because of this, the chapters about the past will not follow a specific timeline, and there will be skipping around. Modern day chapters may only be 1,000 words or they could be on the upwards of 4,000+.

May 1st 2002

"it's our last assembly in elementary school" Emma smiles.

"and then we go to high school" Bree grins, nodding.

"but what really matters is that summer is around the corner" Grayson pipes up on Emma's other side.

"you're going to camp right?" Emma asks, turning to Bree.

"no, my dad never signed the form" Bree shakes her head, frowning at the thought.

"why not? it's free because you filled out the scholarship form" Grayson frowns.

"he got mad" Bree murmurs, shrinking in on herself.

"what'd he get mad about?" Emma inquires.

"um-" Bree starts but soon Mrs. Lewis is ushering them into the gymnasium.

"Brittany, sit on the end right here" Mrs. Lewis assigns, pointing to a seat at the end of the row.

"why?" Bree asks, curious as any sixth grader would be.

"you're shorter, so I thought you might get a better view on the end" Mrs. Lewis lies easily.

"m'kay" Bree shrugs, accepting the lie and sitting down where Mrs. Lewis told her to.

"well hello there James Madison Elementary School!" Their principal, Dr. Underwood, walks to the center of the gym.

None of the kids say anything in response.

"I said hello there James Madison Elementary School!" Dr. Underwood repeats.

"Hello" The kids say back.

"are you ready for another pep rally?" Dr. Underwood asks.

"yeah!" The kids call back.

"great! could I get each classes representatives to come down?" Dr. Underwood requests.

"Bree, you're our representative" Mrs. Lewis says.

"cool" Bree smiles, skipping down the steps and joining the five other six graders who are from the five other classes.

"alright, so our class representatives parents are here and they're going to participate in a game with us" Dr. Underwood continues, gesturing to where several parents are lined up on the wall.

Bree is hurt but not surprised when she doesn't spot her mom or dad in the line of parents. She thought maybe they'd want to come to this, especially if she was chosen as her class' representative.

"alright, so our contestants will be playing a game against their parents, we've scattered different stuffed animals all across the gym, hidden in different places, and whichever team finds the most wins" Dr. Underwood announces.

"okay, so who wants the parents to win?" Dr. Underwood asks.

All of the kids chatter but don't cheer or anything.

"and who wants the kids to win?" Dr. Underwood inquires.

That gets all of the kids cheering, wanting to support their classmates.
