Emma Robinson didn't know what would happen on that fateful day in her private school. At about 12:00, lunch time, her best friend Lisa Jones sat next to her and whispered close in her ear, "Emma, guess what? You, me Mackenzie and Laney are going to stay the night at the haunted house. We're going to tell our parents that we're staying at Rachel's house for the night, and since we don't have phones our parents won't get worried if we don't call." Emma gave Lisa the kind of look you give someone when you think they're crazy. Lisa, recognising the look,
smiled at Emma with all her teeth showing. Emma moved her black hair away from her eyes to smile back at Lisa.
"You, Mackenzie and Laney have fun on that trip. I'll just stay in my house not getting scared by ghosts." Emma said with a chuckle.
Lisa, looking annoyed with Emma's answer, said "You always want to do stuff like this. You even have a reputation for being adventurous!"
"I'm still not going, Lisa."
"Fine. But I just want you to know that the only reason we invited you was because Mackenzie wanted you there." After saying this, Lisa moved to a different lunch table.
Lisa left Emma with her eyes wide open and her jaw dropping to the ground. She couldn't believe that her best friend ever since kindergarten had just said those 12 words.
The only reason that we invited you was because Mackenzie wanted you there.
The words rung in her head like bells. She looked around to see if anyone else had heard that. Then she remembered that she and Lisa always say together, and nobody sat with her, they sat with Lisa. Then, through her watering eyes she saw Mackenzie come to the table she was at. Emma wiped he tears of her face just as Mackenzie sat down.
"What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be sitting with Lisa and Laney figuring out your plan for the haunted house?" Emma said sadly.
"Lisa told us what she said. It wasn't true, you know. She wants you there just as much as I do. We all want you there." Mackenzie said through her red hair.
"I-I just don't get it. Why would she say that to me?"
"She's just upset because she told Andrew she likes him and he said 'Who are you again?'"
Emma gave Mackenzie the look of disbelief. Andrew was her other best friend and she knew for a fact that Andrew liked Lisa.
"Alright, if you don't tell the others... I'll go."
