One month later, Avery was quietly packing a bag for her first weekend visit with her biological father. While he hadn't been granted custody, the judge had ruled that he had the right to have Avery for one weekend every month, as well as every other Wednesday night for dinner. She had been with him for dinner twice now, but this weekend would be the first time she stayed with him overnight. To say she was anxious was an understatement.
Taylor and Travis had tried to appeal the decision, even getting a letter from Avery's therapist stating how harmful this decision would be to her ongoing struggles with separation anxiety. But unfortunately, the judge held by his decision. Avery had been struggling with panic attacks all week leading up to the visit, and her nightmares about losing Taylor or Travis had returned. They were doing their best to reassure her that it would all be okay, promising that they would be staying close by and would always be just a phone call away if she needed to come home for any reason.
They dropped her off on Friday evening after she had finished with her schoolwork. Her father lived about 25 minutes away, so Taylor and Travis decided to get dinner nearby just in case Avery needed them. They texted her to check in after they finished eating, but she just replied with a quick "I'm okay. Can't talk now" which did very little to settle the nervous ache in Taylor's stomach. But when she called before bedtime to say goodnight, she seemed okay, which was enough for Taylor to relax and get some sleep herself.
They tried to adjust to this new normal, and everything was going well until Sunday evening. They had just gotten home from Travis's game when the alert came in that Avery's blood sugar was dangerously low and dropping rapidly. Without even stopping to think, Travis sent her a quick text to remind her to treat it.

Time for a snack, kiddo. You're really low right now
A few seconds later he got a reply that made his stomach drop.

I can't. He won't let me
Travis called her immediately, his heart racing until she picked up. She was whispering, and he had never heard her sound this scared before.
"What's going on sweetie?" Travis asked, putting the call on speaker so Taylor could hear too.
"I... I'm scared Dad," Avery whispered.
Travis quickly switched the call over to FaceTime, wanting to see what was happening. Avery was in what looked to be her bedroom, tears streaming down her face.
"Have you eaten anything yet? A piece of candy even? You're still dropping," Taylor asked, glancing down at Avery's readings on her phone.
"I can't. Eric isn't here. He left. A few hours ago I think. But I'm locked in her and I don't have any food with me," Avery explained.
"That asshole," Travis mumbled, "Avery, sweetie, hang on tight. We're gonna get help, okay?"
"I don't feel good," Avery mumbled.
"I know, sweetie. We're gonna get you feeling better so soon, we promise," Travis replied.
"Daddy? Please don't let me die," Avery begged.
The last thing she heard before everything faded to black was the sound of Travis screaming for help.
Ahhh please don't hate me! I promise this is going somewhere good and it'll all be worth it!
