Chapter 23

A/N: Hi sorry I'm the absolute worst!! I wrote this weeks ago and genuinely thought I had posted it already 😭

Two weeks later, Travis was finally discharged from the hospital's rehab program. While he was still dealing with quite a bit of pain, it was much more manageable now and he had proven that he could handle basic tasks like getting dressed and brushing his teeth with some minor assistance from Taylor. He was set up with an in-home physical therapist and occupational therapist who would be coming several times a week to help him gain strength and function as he continued to recover, and he would have lots of follow-up appointments with the various specialist who were caring for him, but at least he would finally be able to sleep in his own bed after almost a month.

Avery couldn't wait to come home, even though she was having a great time with her cousins. She had remembered Taylor's promise of a family movie night and had spent the last few days picking out all the best movies for them to watch.

A few days before Travis was discharged, Taylor had flown out to Philly to pick up Avery, thanking Kylie and Jason extensively for stepping in to help while their lives were in chaos. Avery was super excited to see her again and couldn't wait to get home to decorate the house to surprise Travis.

"Thanks again for giving her a safe space and some normalcy for the past few weeks," Taylor said while she was waiting for Avery to gather her last few things to bring home.

"She's always welcome here, Tay. You all are," Kylie replied, "She was actually a huge help around here. The girls loved having their big cousin here to play with and she helped me finish setting up the nursery too."

"Ohh can I see it?" Taylor asked excitedly.

"Absolutely! Avery's been dying to show you, I'm sure she'll want to give you the full tour before you leave," Kylie responded.

As expected, Avery was thrilled to show off the clothes she had helped to hang and fold and the pale blue walls she had helped paint. Taylor couldn't help but smile seeing her daughter so excited about her new baby cousin. Avery was practically bouncing as she excitedly showed off the tiny onesies she had helped to fold and the special stuffed dinosaur she had picked out.

"This looks amazing, guys!" Taylor said, taking in the space that was all ready for her new little nephew, "I can't wait to come visit once the little guy is here!"

Before they knew it, it was time to head home again. Taylor had a lot to do in order to get the house ready for Travis to come home, and she wanted Avery to have a day to get settled in before the chaos of visiting nurses and therapists started.

Avery was happily reading her new book on the flight back to Kansas City while Taylor returned emails and triple checked her to-do list. About halfway through the flight, Avery put her book down and moved to sit next to Taylor.

"Mom?" Avery asked quietly.

"What's up, kiddo?" Taylor replied, putting down her phone.

"Are you and Dad gonna have a baby one day too? So I can be a big sister just like Wyatt?" she asked.

"Maybe one day we will, sweetie. But for now I guess you're stuck with me and your Dad all to yourself," Taylor laughed.

"Ohh. That's okay I guess," Avery replied, seeming a little disappointed, "I just thought it seemed really fun to have other kids to play with all the time."

"C'mere kiddo," Taylor said, pulling Avery in for a hug, "I know it must have been a lot of fun having your cousins around to play with, huh?"

Avery went back to reading her book after that, choosing to curl up on one of the couches for the rest of the flight. Meanwhile, Taylor was deep in thought.

She really hadn't given it a second thought until now, but she'd felt off for the past few weeks. And her period had to be at least a month late at this point, but she had brushed that off as being from the stress of Travis being hurt. After all, she had taken a test a few weeks ago when she first realized she was late and it was negative.

There was no chance she could be pregnant.

Right?
