Zim furrowed his face where his eyebrows would be if he had any. He took Dib's hands in his and tried to remove them from his face. Dib kept them firmly placed there despite this. "Dib... Why are your HANDS glued to your FACE?"
"Shut up."
Zim tilted his head. "We're MISSING an episode right now."
"I'll be there in a sec... just go." Dib spoke in a muffled voice.
Zim shrugged, frowning and went back to the couch. Dib went into the bathroom and locked the door. He splashed his face with water and looked at his red face in the mirror. "What's wrong with me?" He sighed. "I have to pull myself together." He took several slow, deep breaths. "Come on Dib, it's a bad idea and you know it. Focus on finishing the marathon and getting him out of your hair." He walked out of the bathroom and pointedly avoided looking at Zim. He sat down on the couch and looked at the screen like a horse with blinders on. Zim watched his face. Dib's mouth was set in a tight line. There was still a light dusting of pink on his cheeks and he leaned forward toward the screen.
Zim put his hand on Dib's arm. "What's wrong?"Dib pulled it away like he had been burnt and stared daggers at Zim. "Don't touch me!" His cheeks were bright red now and Zim went pale. He blinked slowly. "Zim was just trying to.."
"I DON'T CARE! Get out" He pointed to the door as his voice shook.
"But we're in the middle of—"
"I said GO!"
Zim frowned and left without another word. Dib sat huffing large breaths on the couch. His whole body was shaking and he buried his face in his hands.
Gaz came downstairs, raising an eyebrow. "You guys are fighting AGAIN? Ugh, why do you even bother to hang out if all you're gonna to is argue with each other? You're giving ME a headache. Ick, teen drama, no thanks."
Dib looked offended. "TEEN DRAMA? You say that like we haven't been enemies since we were kids!"
Gaz shook her head. "You two are exhausting. You could cut the tension with a knife, just have him move in already."
Dib stood, crossing his arms. "Move in? MOVE IN? Why in the world would I want that? And have to deal with him 24/7? No thanks. I can barely handle seeing him at school."
Gaz snorted. "Fine, don't blame me if you explode." She blew a bubble with her gum nonchalantly. She focused more intensely on her game."
"Blow up? Gaz, what the heck are you talking about?"
"Remind me why you don't have a significant other yet?"
Dib rubbed the back of his neck and looked at the ground. "I'm working on it, okay?" His ears flushed. "Besides! What does that have to do with Zim?"
Gaz paused her game and looked Dib straight in the eye, blinking slowly like it was the dumbest question she had ever heard.
"Well? I'm waiting."
She rolled her eyes. "You're an idiot." She went back to playing her game and went back upstairs.
"Hey, Gaz!" Dib shouted after her but she was already gone. Did Gaz know something he didn't? He felt so drained that he spaced out for the entire rest of the marathon and ended up falling asleep on the couch.
Meanwhile, Zim had walked home whilst dragging his feet. He had been waiting for this day for weeks. He had marked it on his day counter and everything! It had been so wonderful he could hardly breathe for the first hour and then it tanked. Of course it tanked. When did anything ever work out in Zim's favor? He sighed, walking back into his house and collapsing onto his bed. Over the years, his house had become more traditionally human. He added a bedroom and everything! The basement and living room were the same as ever. He hated to admit it but Zim had grown to like earth. He had never had a serious rival on Irk. He had always been so SUPERIOR to everyone else! That was what he told himself anyway. Deep inside he knew that he had been a nobody there. He thought Earth was different. He felt like he mattered here. Now he wasn't so sure. Dib had gotten distracted and stopped pursuing him so closely as he got older. Zim felt like they were growing apart. As a result, Zim tried harder than ever to get Dib's attention! Zim didn't want to admit that things had changed.
He stared up at the glow-in-the-dark stars on his ceiling. Should Zim just go back into space and give up on Earth? The thought of never seeing Dib again made his squeedily splootch hurt. Tears silently rolled down his cheeks and he grabbed his body pillow and hugged it tightly. He winced at how the contact made his burnt hands hurt. They never got that burn cream, Zim's mind wandered to imagining Dib gently applying the cream to his painful hands. He smiled despite himself before shaking his head and going to the store.
As it happened, this was the same store Dib had gone to earlier and Cobalt still stood behind the counter. The sight of them made Zim's blood boil. This was the person of Dib's most recent fascination. They had stolen his attention from Zim! He kept his head down and pulled his hood over his face. He searched the aisles for burn cream but couldn't find it. Oh no! He would have to ask for help from this person! He walked up to the counter and cleared his throat. "Does this ESTABLISHMENT sell cream for BURNS?"
Cobalt looked up from their phone. "If we do it would be with the pain killers."
"It is NOT."
"Then no."
"Why?"
Cobalt shrugged tiredly. "I dunno, convenience store items don't always make sense. I'm sure the drug store down the street would have some." Zim nodded dramatically before walking out of the store. His breathing was unsteady and his body felt hot with RAGE! He grumbled and used his metal legs to raise himself into the air to better look for this 'drug store'. He didn't see any buildings labeled as DRUG STORE until he took out his binoculars and read under a big sign in little letters 'drug store.' Zim resumed standing on his regular legs and walked to the drug store. He walked down 4 aisles before he found the burn cream. He bought it and left. He walked back to his house and plopped on his bed again. What a rollercoaster of a day.
