   I remember when I put that gum in Akomori's hair. It was 8th grade. The day after that man did that to me, and my parents let him. I was mad, angry and sad. I arrived at school with my legs aching and bruised. so I wore pants. even though it was against the dress code. Then there was Akomori. She was in my reading class sitting with her friends. Mark and Sarah. Sarah was staring at Mark with her dumb lovey-dovey eyes, and Mark was oblivious to it. Talking with Akomori. she was just sitting there. so perfect. with her dumb Hazel colored hair and shining eyes. It made me feel weird, and mad I wanted to ruin her. so I take out my gum and as I walk past. I slapped the back of her head, and the pink spot stuck out. clinging to her hair but she didn't feel it. She looked at me confused and I smiled at her, and left with a laugh. 

    she didn't realize until Mark pointed it out. By then I was in the bathroom smoking my mother's cigarettes, not an uncommon practice for me. She ran inside and looked at it in the mirror. A helpless expression on her face, and it did something to me. It made me want to protect her, and say sorry and help her get it out. but I didn't. I just stood there and she panicked and she spoke in a hushed whisper. "oh god! God. Why did this happen? How did this happen!? I never chew gum! My mom's gonna kill me!" I just stared at her unmoving. till I felt the burn of the cigarette on my finger tips. And that caused me to suck in a sharp breath and drop it. It hit the floor with a soft tap, and she whipped around making her hair fly. She looked at me. "y-you! Kate, why did you do this! You ruined my hair!"

     She looked like she was about to cry. that same helpless expression on her face. "Whatever gets over it princess" I say venom filling my voice as I stomp out the bud of my cigarette and pick it up tossing it in the trash I say.  "hey you have gum in your hair you know." she stared at me but not with anger. with sadness, and she turned away and kept trying to get the gum out of her hair. The next day she had to cut her hair to get it out, and then she styled it differently. it just made people like her more. Why did I do that? now she lays on the ground. Her arm trembles as she breathes heavily. Tears fill her eyes, and without thinking I run over to her. and her arm. God's blood is flowing down it like a river. I look up and I see the man with his group. I pick her up in my arms ''you're gonna be fine Akomori? just don't scream don't scream.'' I say as I run to the other side of the building. To the fire escape a woman raises her gun, and the man says in a husky voice.

    "Don't shoot her, I want her alive and well." so they jump and chase after us. I see the top of Riley's head disappear down the ladder and Marlen looks at me. "get down the ladder !" I urge him to go down the ladder, and he does with surprising speed. and I follow. Once we are on the ground I look up and the adults are following, and the screams and rapid footsteps of the crazies. only make me panic more. It's hard to think with all that noise! but soon gun shots are being fired "god dammit. These zombies are gaining. Get inside the building." they run away from the edge and I hear a door slam. "the crazies are occupied, we have to go to the police station, it's just a block away!" Sarah shouts and she takes Mark by the hand and Kara and Kim help Harry make the run. with Marlen's hand grasped in mine I ran with them. Akomori's whimpers and yelps fill my ears as every step must send pain through her arm. Once the police station is in sight.

     I speed up over taking the group Akomori's whimpers turn to screams of pain as I reach the police station. It has fences with barbed wire on the top and a gate with a lock. letting go of Marlen and I look around for anything that could help. But everything useful is on the inside. “Whats wrong?” Marlen asks as he looks around “the gate is locked” I respond in a panicked tone “follow me.” I say as I run around the perimeter of the fence and I see a spot where it has fallen in. Looks like the crazies didn't let the fence stand in there way. "hurry the fuck up!" I shout to the group and they reach the corner. I duck into the hole and I run to the door there. I tried to open it, but I couldn't. it's locked. so I raise my foot and I kick it once. Pain shoots up my foot and I grit my teeth. the door shakes, I kick it again more pain and it groans. I slam my foot into it with all my strength as I hear the crazies nearby awaken and start running towards us. The door fly's open and I run in. and I set Akomori down.
