The first thing I see as I take in my unfamiliar surrounding are dark tree trunks and overhanging limbs of branches looking down towards me. As I swivel on my feet to look for anything else other than these gloomy trees I hear wind slipping through the leaves and cracking undergrowth underneath my feet with every cautious step I take. Feeling weeds and grass tickling my calfs I look around at this endless forest.
My throat is dry and I feel sweat on my lips as my heart is slamming against my ribs, I gulp down the cold, crisp air feeling more apprehensive by the second. Where the hell am I?
"Hello?" I shout loudly into the distance but all that replies is echos of my own words travelling throughout the woods. I try to slow my breathing a much as I can to hopefully hear something, anything.
I continue to walk down a narrow path that leads into a bone-chilling open area and as I reach the centre, I hear a wolf howling in the distance, mocking me almost. I gasp as I stop breathing altogether to listen out on where It came from.
I hear the terrifying howl again which sounds closer as I turn around to face the sound, but I see nothing. Again, the same howl shouts at me from a different direction, and it's almost like it's circling me, mocking me. I still see nothing but I feel as if the howl is right behind me. Fuck this.
I run. I sprint in the opposite direction where I last heard the treacherous noise. I'm slipping on wet leaves beneath me as I feel beaches smacking me all over as I try to avoid them as much as possible. The howling is still behind me and I hear it getting closer everytime. I huff and groan as I keep up my pace. Turning my head around to see if I can see the wolf but as I do I trip on a root of a tree.
I swear to myself as I feel scrapes and cuts on my hands, pine needles embedded in my skin, twisting and jerking at every unfamalilar sounds. I feel pain running from my ankle up towards by knee due to spraining it on impact. I moan out in agony, trying not to make a lot of noise as I scoot back on my bum and lean back against a tree truck.
I clutch my ankle tight to try to soothe the pain and I steady my breathing. I note to myself that the howling has stopped. The only thing I hear his my heart beating on my ribs as if its trying to break through and launch out of my chest. I keep my eyes and ears on alert as I study my surroundings but the forest as gone strangely, deathly quiet. Too quiet.
As I am about to relax thinking I lost the wolf, I hear a deep growl too close for my liking. In the shadows infront of me I see it.
The wolf prowls out from behind a thick tall tree staring right into my bewildered eyes. The first thing I notice is its black fur that is darker than nightfall, steel grey claws extended from the wolf's large paws as it stalks towards by frightened frame. Its lips were pulled back tight as its nose twitched.
