The practice session wasn't so bad, and it's true what Mia said about Xander—he's hot. He even gave me a ride home; such a sweet guy. As I stepped into the mansion and closed the door behind me, Mom greeted me from the living room. As I finished taking a shower and having a meal, I lay in my bed, I took a deep breath, replaying the events of the evening in my mind. My phone buzzed in my pocket, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was Mia, of course. She never missed a chance to get the latest scoop.
"Hey, Bree! How was the first day as the team ambassador?" Mia's voice was bright and eager.
I smiled, knowing she was dying for details. "It was interesting, to say the least."
"Interesting? That's it? Come on, girl, give me something! How's Xander? I heard he's a total heartthrob."
I laughed, shaking my head at her excitement. "Yeah, Xander's definitely easy on the eyes. And he gave me a ride home, so that was nice."
Mia squealed on the other end of the line. "No way! You got a ride from Xander Hayes? Spill, Bri! What happened?"
"Calm down, Mia," I said, trying to hold back my own amusement. "It wasn't a big deal. He insisted because it was getting late and I couldn't find an Uber. We talked a bit on the way, that's all."
"Talked about what?" Mia pressed, her curiosity insatiable.
"Just small stuff—music, food, that kind of thing. It was surprisingly easy to talk to him. He's not just a jock, you know? There's more to him than I thought."
Mia sighed dreamily. "Sounds like the start of a romance novel. Do you like him?"
I paused, considering her question. "Not really, Mia. He's nice, but I'm not looking for anything. This ambassador gig is just something to put on my resume, remember?"
"Fair enough," Mia conceded. "But keep me posted, okay? I'm living vicariously through you."
I promised I would and we ended the call. Just as I set my phone down, it buzzed again. A text this time. I unlocked the screen to see a message from an unknown number.
Xander: Hey, Brielle. It's me Xander, since I forgot to asked you your number, I just asked a friend of mine. Sorry if I upset you because of this. Just wanted to make sure you got home safely. Thanks for chatting tonight. It was nice getting to know you a little.
I sighed, appreciating the gesture but also feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sudden attention.
Brielle: Thanks, Xander. I got home safe and sound. It was nice talking to you too. See you at the next practice?
Xander: Absolutely. Have a good night, Brielle.
Brielle: You too, Xander.
As I set my phone aside, I couldn't help but feel a bit conflicted. Xander Hayes was definitely intriguing, but I had my own plans and ambitions. Getting involved with the captain of the soccer team wasn't on my agenda. I was here to do a job, not get distracted by charming athletes.
Fast forward a few weeks, I found myself making an appearance on the field once or twice every week. Xander never missed giving me a ride home, and although our conversations flowed easily and naturally, I remained cautious. Our connection was growing stronger, but I kept reminding myself that I was here for my studies and this ambassador role, nothing more.

### Riverdale Cafeteria
Brielle and Xander were having lunch together, the bustling atmosphere of the cafeteria providing a lively backdrop to their conversation.
I picked at my salad, glancing up at Xander as he recounted a funny incident from practice.
"So, Ben tried to show off by juggling the ball, and he ended up tripping over his own feet," Xander said, laughing.
I couldn't help but chuckle. "Sounds like something Ben would do. How's the team feeling about the big game?"
Xander shrugged, his expression thoughtful. "They're pumped but also nervous. It's a crucial tournament. But I think we'll do well if we stay focused."
"Well, I'm sure you'll lead them to victory," I said, genuinely believing in his leadership. "You seem to have a good handle on things."
"Thanks, Brielle. That means a lot coming from you." Xander's eyes met mine, and I could see the sincerity there.
I smiled, appreciating his earnestness. "Just telling it like it is. And you know, you can just call me Bree since it isn't fair I called you Xander and you called me Brielle. But if you preferred to call me Brielle, I'll start calling you Alexander".
Xander chuckles , "No, I preferred to call you Bree".
"That's more like it". And we both shared a laugh.
Our conversation shifted to lighter topics, ranging from favorite movies to the best study spots on campus. Despite our growing rapport, I remained guarded. Xander was great, but I wasn't looking to get involved. I had goals and ambitions that didn't include getting sidetracked by a potential romance.
As we finished our lunch, Xander leaned back in his chair, a relaxed smile on his face. "I enjoy these lunches, Brielle I mean Bree. It's nice to have someone to talk to about things outside of soccer."
"Yeah, it's been nice," I agreed, genuinely appreciating our growing friendship. "But just remember, I'm here to do my job. No distractions, okay?"
Xander chuckled, raising his hands in mock surrender. "Got it. No distractions. Just good company."
I nodded, satisfied with his response. Despite our differences and the ease of our interactions, I was determined to stay focused on my path. Xander Hayes might be an intriguing companion, but for now, he was just that—a companion.
