Welcome to the every lunar eclipse updates, here we make our favourite main character of the story ruined 😜
Dave impatiently tapped his foot against the hardwood floor. It barely left an echo as he continued, Dave clutched the broom in his hand tightly. As much as he tried to ignore it, he wanted to leave work early today. It wasn't usual of him to have thoughts like that. Dave had always loved working at the circus, it was the place that relieved his stress. But today brought him stress. It had been a few days after his encounter with Kristy, and lo and behold she confessed her feelings directly to Jack. Jack had accepted the relationship offer, and they had began dating.
It wasn't that Dave was unhappy, he was glad that his friend was able to have someone to be together with. He could understand that the new town moving could take some adjusting to do, so it's good to have someone near. Dave just felt a bit bad now that Jack would probably would hang out with Kristy more. It wasn't his initial hope or plan, he wanted someone to hang with for the time being.
And while his thoughts drifted to Kristy and Jack, Dave realised something, he never understood the concept of loving someone. Well, maybe he loved Henry. But that was a father-son dynamic. Just saying 'loving someone' wasn't the right term he wanted, but romance. He didn't get why someone would need to attach themself to someone for the rest of their life, possibly even removing half the will the person had gotten before a relationship.
Of course he wouldn't express his displease and confusion publicly, he'd definitely get shot down since he's never generally understood romance. Maybe he just needed to experience it for once, maybe then he wouldn't have to ponder whenever he saw a couple walk down the street. Though, in all honesty, he even doubted he'd get to feel the touch of a woman ever. Not like he cared, to be frank.
Suddenly, his thoughts were interrupted by small child's voice and a tug at his shirt, "Excuse me, mr purple man, do you have balloons??" the child pleaded with their eyes gleaming looking up at Dave.
Dave froze briefly, before relaxing, "Uh, yes actually. They're around the corner," he clarified, leading the kid to a smaller stand with balloons, he cleared his throat when he looked at the balloon colors, "so...what color do you want?"
"Hm...purple please! Like you!" The child gleamed, with the same starry-eyed look in their eyes as they seemed fascinated by Dave's appearance.
Dave mentally frowned and grabbed a purple balloon from one of the cabinets and filled it with helium. After a small moment of him internally struggling to tie the balloon to prevent helium leaking, he tied the string onto the balloon and handed it to the kid, "Here you go," he sighed.
The child giggled gleefully and skipped off to his parents. He was quite a ray of sunshine, especially for a place like this. Speaking of which...
A cold hand gripped Dave's shoulder and Dave flinched and whipped around. Henry stood behind him with a grimace, "We need to discuss something in my office," he stated. Dave reluctantly nodded, did Henry notice his demeanour earlier of him wanting to leave?
Once the two were in Henry's office, Dave made sure he closed the door behind him in case it was something necessary like that. Usually office talks were serious about the business, and were restricted to be heard from other employees. Henry sat behind his desk in his chair and motioned Dave to sit on the other side of the desk in one of the seats. Dave did as told and took a seat.
"Murdering our employees haven't been enough, William. Adults have more traces to them, a lawyer, possibly a wider family, and connections. They're precarious to kill, some having stronger builds, louder voices, and more," Henry started off, organising stacks papers he had lying on his desk.
Dave's heart raced, does he want them to stop killing people? But the whole slaughtering was the main thing keeping Henry's research up, whatever it was or meant. Whatever was important to Henry could be important to Dave. "O-Okay, where are you goin' with this? Are you suggesting we just...stop the murdering?" Dave questioned.
Henry shook his head, "We can always have a new target. Everyday unsuspecting families come into our circus with their children, with hope and intention of a fun afternoon to see the performances. So, we might as well target the children. They don't matter as much."
Dave frowned, "We killed an employee 2 weeks ago, and we already are in trouble enough. Henry, there's- there's one of our employees is trying to rat us out for these murders. With all due respect, we shouldn't just dive into child murders like this. It can't be a consistent thing, maybe some every now and then, but just switching gears won't work out," he tried to explain.
Henry seemed displeased at Dave's explanation, but he listened, "You make a fair point, William. We will only target the children sometimes. My research at sometimes will include are child carcass, you may continue your work now. Thank you for your time," Henry stated, motioning Dave to leave the office while Henry continued his organising.
Dave got up from the chair he sat in and left the office. He had a lot he wanted to talk to Henry about, he wanted to talk about how he had been feeling recently, he wanted to mention every flaw he started to notice, he had so much to say, yet he knew Henry didn't have the time to answer it all. Yet alone care.
But that was okay with Dave, he knew Henry was a hard working man and needed no distractions. Dave had gotten to the point where he had fully convinced himself that all of his problems weren't that bad unless Henry was worried. Which wasn't normally, so he was fine. He had nothing to worry about.
As Dave left he was greeted by Jack passing by, "Why were you in the boss's office? Did you get in trouble?" Jack questioned, "You end up in his office a lot lately," he remarked after.
Dave had to think of an excuse quick, what he usually did. Jack was the one after all on their tails about the string murders. "A parent complained to Henry about my performance today, he just wanted to check up on me. He just told me to get back to work now," he explained, it came out more confident than he expected.
"Huh, well okay. Glad you're not in trouble, didn't know parents we're so snarky about performances. Oh well. Anyway, I'm going to start cleaning up. It's getting late noon," Jack said as he walked off to get some cleaning supplies from the closet
As Jack left, Dave frowned to himself. He had been feeling way to drained recently, Jack and Kristy couldn't have taken that big of tole on him, right? It didn't feel like Dave was in his normal cheery mood. Dave knew he wasn't the same, which wasn't normal of him. Usually when Jack would talk to him, he'd feel more energetic and ready to work. It was nice having a friend, especially one that gave him motivation. Now that they felt more distanced, Dave lost some of that drive.
Dave walked towards where Jack headed and he spoke up, "Hey, Jack. Tell me about why you moved here, I want to hear about it."
