Karden's POV:

My vision was blurring and there was complete chaos surrounding me. All I remember is feeling the unbearable pain of my mate being bound against her will, blood covering her face and flesh a pale-gray from the spell Sam was chanting.

When we burst through the door, Maximus came to view and my body vibrated with pain and rage that I went for him first. After a few blows and blood and sweat, his heart was in my hand.

Mavis tells me to stay down when I crawl to hear, to feel her and make sure she is alive. I laid down, face pressed on the floor although I wanted to help my family. to stop Sam from whatever he's been masterminding. Cries and yells were a muffling noise to my ears until lights flashed beneath my lids.

BOOM!

A crash of shattered glass exploded through the room—

Mavis's POV:

I kneel down when glass particles fly, covering my body from any sharp debris. The crystals fall like snow on the side of the building, in hopes no one below is hurt. My body leans over Karden's behind the couch, glass leaving slits along my arms, blood running down my flesh.

Sam screams when I look up, his body turning into nothing but particles of ash in the air. A hard breeze rushes through the loft, loose papers flying out of the broken windows and swaying in the air. There's an ache in my chest and I don't know if it's because it's over or if because Sam is truly gone.

Issy wipes her nose and ears, blood oozing out of them and Damien stares at her with a washed-out face of fear. She grins until her lids flutter and she collapses onto the floor. I shoot up and run to my bedroom, thrusting myself into the door and finding the computer still loading.

I sit down and begin to click escape but it's not working. Someone appears behind me and when I look it's Damien staring at the screen over my shoulder.

"How can you—"

"Sam is—was an idiot." I tell him, handing dripping with blood off my fingertips every time I type on the keyboard.

Damien watches as I break into the passcode and begin hacking. My fingers slip from the wetness but are fluent to the keys, eyes fixated on the screen. It goes black and green coding begins to process the work I am making.

"Come' on," Damien mutters behind me and I stop typing but there's a pause in the coding and a wait.

...

My heart reaches my throat and I find trouble breathing. Damien's hand reaches my shoulder and the whole screen goes black .

Process cancelled.

I shoot up in my seat, relief washing over me when I turn and pull Damien into a hug. He exhales a sudden breath too, squeezing me with relief as well. We pull away and I glance out of the hallway, Karden and Issy still on the ground. Rushing to them with Damien at my side, I turn Karden around so he is laying flat on his back.

"Karden," I shake his shoulders while Damien tends to Issy's side. "Wake up," I say but he doesn't flutter his eyes. Slowly, I run my bloody fingers along his lips and between his parted mouth.

His tongue is hit with delight, orbs moving beneath his lids until they slowly open.

"Mavis, I'm so sorry." He mutters, reaching out with a weak hand to cup my cheek but I wrap my own fingers around it, squeezing tightly.

"It's okay, we're okay." I tell him, smiling with tears embedded in my eyes.

Sirens and voices echo hundreds of feet below, outside the building. It's a matter of time until they come into the loft. There's banging inside my father's bedroom and I rush to help Karden up to his feet meanwhile Issy is stirring awake.
