I walk down the clinic, Nara gave up a room for us just for this examination.
I glance down at her chart, flicking through her pages of medical history. I reach her door and push it open with my free hand, and there Nathaniel sat, on the chair he pulled close to the bed. He was grazing his daughter's messy hair that I can see he attempted to do but failed, miserably.
"Hello."
"Hi." He speaks, standing up from his seat.
"Is she sleeping?"
He nodded curtly, his demeanour shifting slightly as he turned his attention back to the sleeping girl on the bed. I followed his gaze, taking in the sight of the young patient with a pang of sympathy. She looked so small and vulnerable, her chest rising and falling with the steady rhythm of sleep.
Clearing my throat, I approached the bed, my eyes scanning the medical chart at the foot. "I see Doctor Andrews has already run some tests. Mind if I take a look?"
He hesitated for a moment before nodding, stepping aside to give me access to the chart. As I flipped through the pages, my brow furrowed with concern at the results. It was clear that the girl's condition was serious, and she would need immediate medical attention.
Sophia was her name.
"I'm going to do some physical tests, you can stay in the room or get a coffee?"
"I'm staying." He responds.
I nod my head, walking towards Sophia as I crouch down. "Hey Sophia..." i speak, waking her up from her sleep. Sophia stirred, her eyelids fluttering open to reveal tired but trusting eyes. She blinked up at me, confusion clouding her expression for a moment before recognition dawned. "My name is Doctor Kandy Kane. I'm here to do a little quick exam."
"Your name is funny."
I chuckle, "I know."
Sophia laughs before that turned into a boxy cough.
She blinked up at me, her gaze flickering between me and her father, uncertainty etched in her features. I reached out, gently taking her hand in mine, the warmth of her small fingers a comforting presence as I sit her up. The covers slide to the side and i grab my stethoscope from around my neck.
"Can you tell me how you're feeling, sweetheart?" I asked, my voice gentle as I tried to gauge her condition.
Her brow furrowed in concentration as she struggled to find the right words. "Tired," she murmured finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "And... it hurts."
"Where does it hurt? Does it hurt here?" I touch the tip of her nose, Sophia releases a small smile, shaking her head. "Here?" I touch her forehead, she laughs.
"No Kandy, it hurts here." She points down to her chest.
I nodded, understanding dawning as Sophia pointed to her chest. "Got it," I said softly, my heart clenching at the thought of her pain. "Thank you for letting me know, Sophia."
