They were lying on their backs on the bed, their fingers playing absently with one another. The fairy lights cast strange shadows on the ceiling that seemed to overlap one another with varying degrees of darkness.
'You knew I liked you more than a friend,' Bethany said.
It wasn't a question, but Kita treated it like one. She hmm-ed under her breath. 'Only tonight, for sure. Your reaction to Rosemary was odd otherwise.'
They fell into a short silence, which Bethany broke.
'I don't think I'm ready to tell everyone.'
'Okay.'
Bethany sat up and looked down at Kita. 'Not that I'm ashamed, I just—it's only I didn't know. Not until right now, I mean.' She shook her head and scrunched her eyes shut. She wasn't making any sense.
'Bee, open your eyes, please,' Kita said.
She did. Kita was sitting up, and her hand came up to gently cup the side of Bethany's face.
'Take all the time you need. We can keep it between us.'
Bethany let out a relieved breath and nodded. A buzzing had Kita standing and reaching around to her back pocket for her phone.
'It's Ben, sorry.' She swiped her thumb across the phone's face. 'Yeah?'
Bethany smiled. Of course, Kita didn't answer the phone with 'Hello.'
'You what? You vomited on your cat?' She sounded disgusted and amused.
Bethany laughed to herself, leaned back against the headboard, and just looked at Kita. She was turned toward the bed, but her head was down, and she was making shapes in the carpet with her foot. Bethany wasn't sure how she had ever looked at Kita differently from how she saw her now. Just the sight of her made her want Kita's hands on her, her mouth exploring passed Bethany's mouth.
Bethany shut her eyes and slouched lower on the bed. Stop it, stop it.
The bed shuddered, and Bethany opened her eyes. Kita was sitting by her feet.
'Is Ben alright?'
'He's fine, Tiger isn't. Poor cat.'
They stared at one another for a long moment, and then Bethany had to look away, her cheeks burning as she replayed the kiss from a few moments ago in her head. She sat up, feeling that being upright might help her feel less vulnerable, but she naturally scooted down the bed, and this just brought her even closer to Kita.
She cleared her throat. 'I feel like I don't know how to just sit in this bed now.'
Kita's mouth twitched in amusement. 'You are quite restless.' She reached out and held Bethany's chin, her thumb coming up to brush against Bethany's lower lip.
Bethany shuddered. This didn't feel real. Yesterday she was my best friend, Kita, who I've known nearly my whole life... And suddenly, the way Kita was looking at her was making her heart hammer against her ribcage, trying to break free of her body completely.
Kita leaned forward, her mouth opening Bethany's slowly. The kiss that followed was gentle and had Bethany's body shamelessly leaning into Kita, wanting her nearer, nearer than their clothes would allow, which was a dizzying thought.
When they broke apart, Kita had to clear her throat.
'We should probably take a small pause,' she said hoarsely.
Bethany nodded, although her body was screaming at her to disagree.
They ended up lying down next to one another again, sharing the same pillow but keeping a small distance between their bodies.
