My dear,

Your last letter I received with much joy, for I had counted the day until its arrival and finally seeing it in my mailbox made me smile wider than I could even imagine. Of course, it was all wiped away after I read what you had written. Yet, I must assure you, it was all ill chance, a bad stroke of luck. You must be confident that it will be better soon. And so I tell you, rest, sleep and dream of a better outcome. And once you have woken, work for it to become a reality. I know you are headed in the right direction. This goal of yours, it is worthy, it is valiant, it is honorable. When others long for adventure, you seek to aid those who have ventured too far.

Along with my letter, I have gifted you the compass that had been my mother's, and before her, my mother's mother, and so it was handed down from mother to daughter until it came to me. I break this cycle for I know you will make better use of it. It was not meant to be a jewel, secreted away in a drawer, waiting to be passed down. It was meant to be used. By you.

I know you will pass this pilot's test. You have studied hard, have suffered many sleepless nights. Have faith, my dear, for you were meant to be so much more. I know it.

Know that I will be thinking about you,

Yours truly,

Your favorite Mathematician.
