Several months had passed since Valaena and her family moved to Dragonstone. Since Joffery was born the whispers would not quiet any longer, tension ran high with Targaryen and Velaryon sons, and the looks would make Valaena uneasy anytime she was accompanied by her two dragons. Especially with Aemond hating her with a passion.
Since they moved to Dragonstone everything had lifted, they were happier and so were the dragons no longer needing to be caged in a cave shackled.
She watched as they roamed the grounds freely, stretching their wings for what felt like the first time for as long as they wanted. Vermax was growing quicker along with Arrax as the dragonpit stumped their growth but with their freedom at dragonstone they thrived. Aegarax and Chromaxys were growing far too quickly it perplexed Valaena, they were ten years of age and becoming bigger than most dragons their elders.
Back at the Red Keep, Viserys would insist that their growth was due to the little time they had in the dragonpit as Valaena would take Chromaxys out to fly twice a day if it were allowed with Aegarax.
Everything in dragonstone was well, until they had gotten the news. Laena Velaryon had died in childbirth.
But that wasn't the worse of it.
Sir Harwin Strong, who had been sent back to Harrenhal had died in a fire.
She had lost both her aunt and true father.
So there Valaena stood with her siblings back at Driftmark, three dark haired boys surrounded by silver hair of their kin and other lords paying their respects to Lady Laena.
Jace squeezed her hand mourning in public rather than private as Valaena stared out at sea with grief, though her face was kept impassive. Listening to Vaemond speak his eulogy as he glared at the rest of her siblings in disgust until his eyes landed on her holding conflict in his eyes not knowing what to believe of her legitimacy.
She had the hair, eyes, and two dragons like a Velaryon and Targaryen but did not understand why her brothers came out with dark hair.
Finally, they moved the coffin closer to the edge of the cliff and by the time Vaemond had finished, the stone had fell into the depths of the sea and two dragon roars were heard far where the sand laid.
Luke was young but he understood grief knowing he would never see Harwin or Laena ever again, that sadness was his lesson of the dead.
An hour later their mother approached them. "Have you seen your father?" Her hands went over to Jace no longer asking Valaena questions knowing that she had known the truth for a while now and refused to talk to her.
"No." Jace shook his head.
Rhaenyra let out a sigh glancing around for Laenor until her eyes landed on two twins sitting down on a stone bench with tears in their eyes. Valaena silently excused herself not wanting to hear her mother's voice explaining that they must comfort their cousins when she had already intended.
