y/n found herself queued up in the school cafeteria where a bustling noise of student chatter filled the air. she looked at her phone to see if there were any messages from their publication. it was the 19th of april, a day before nekoma's friendly match against karasuno.

as she scanned through the crowd to find a vacant seat, her eyes locked at kuroo's, who's seated with another boy focused on his video games. y/n recognized him as kozume kenma, the setter of the school's volleyball team.

"over here!" kuroo called out, waving at her. y/n let out a small sigh of relief and slowly made her way to them, careful to not spill the food on her tray as she went pass the students. she felt a butterfly of excitement in her chest.

y/n struggled a bit. she found her tray too heavy to carry through the crowded cafeteria. kuroo noticed her struggling and quickly came up to her, "here, let me help you with that," he said, taking the tray from her hands like it was light as feathers.

"thank you," she said, shyly. he smiled and led the way back to where their table was, kenma still focused on his game and didn't seem to care.

"this is our setter, kenma," kuroo introduced, tapping his friend's shoulder that he almost let go of his nintendo. "kenma, this is y/n. she's from the school paper. the one i told you guys about."

he talked about me to his friends? y/n blushed, surprised that kuroo had already mentioned about her.

"hi, nice to meet you," she said while trying to sound casual. kenma muttered a small "hi" in response before going back to his game, his voice barely above a whisper compared to kuroo's. but y/n didn't mind and instead found it cute that these two friends have different personalities.

as they finished their lunch, kuroo looked at her. excitement was visible in his eyes and reminded her about the match the next day, "don't forget, tomorrow's the big day," he said. "i can't wait for you to see us play." y/n nodded, feeling a surge of anticipation.

they said their goodbyes after leaving the cafeteria together. as they walked a little further away, y/n overheard a snippet of conversation from kuroo and kenma.

"big day? it's just a friendly match," kenma remarked casually that made y/n chuckle.

as y/n entered their office, she was greeted by uchida mai, their editor-in-chief, giving her a teasing look. "here, let me help you with that," mai teased, imitating kuroo's earlier gesture.

she chuckled and rolled her eyes playfully. "he was just being helpful," trying to brush off the teasing.

"uh-huh, sure," the editor-in-chief said as they laugh along.

y/n realized there was no escaping in her friend's teasing and might have to live with it for the rest of the school year.
