"just approach her, kuroo!" yaku groaned, wiping the sweat off his face. kuroo looked uncertain, scratching his head as he thought about what his teammate said.
"what if she finds me weird?" kuroo replied, his voice betraying his nervousness.
"yeah." kenma, who was lying on the floor with his eyes closed, simply said.
yaku groaned again, "you're not helping, kenma," he muttered, but kenma didn't seem to care. the setter was too exhausted to engage further.
lev, the optimistic first year middle blocker, tried to encourage his nervous senior. "just try, kuroo-san. is it that scary to approach a girl?" he asked in a curious tone.
kuroo roled his eyes, almost giving up. "i asked the wrong people," he said, bending down to pick up the volleyballs scattered around the gym.
the night was already quiet outside, and the day's training had left them all tired.
-
kuroo was bombarded with text messages from yaku, cursing and asking where he was because it's late. the rain was pouring heavily. kuroo ran quickly to the bus station, his uniform and hair both soaked from the downpour.
when the bus arrived, kuroo tried to wipe his wet hair with his handkerchief, the droplets still clinging to his skin. he sat on the bus, and through the glass window's reflection, he saw a familiar face beside him. his breath caught in his throat.
it was y/n, the student journalist from their school, the one that he had a crush on. kuroo, despite his heart was about to explode, tried to act as calm as possible. his mind was battling between excitement and nervousness as he contemplated starting a conversation.
suddenly, y/n spoke up. "you're on the volleyball team, right?"
kuroo was shocked and froze for a second before composing himself and looked at her with the best smile that he could give. "yeah, you follow the team?" he asked, trying to keep his voice steady despite the butterflies in his stomach.
"no, but i'm from the school publication. i've heard a lot about the team," y/n replied.
kuroo felt a mix of relief and disappointment washed over him. so she doesn't really know me?
both of them continued talking until they've become comfortable with each other and found it easier to engage in the conversation.
kuroo asked for her number as he told her about their friendly match against karasuno so that he can let her know when it starts, when in fact, he just wanted her contact. the girl did not hesitate and gave him her number, and kuroo felt a wave of triumph.
"so i'll see you around?"
"see ya!"
he then gave her a playful wink before running quickly to the gymnasium, the rain still pouring, but this time, he didn't mind.
-
yaku greeted kuroo with an angry face. "we've been waiting here for almost half an h-" he started, but kuroo cut him off, breathless and excited.
"i got her number," kuroo blurted out, his eyes shining with excitement. yaku looked confused, his anger melting into surprise.
"what? what number? whose number?" yaku asked, trying to understand. kuroo could hardly contain his grin.
kenma, now playing his video game beside inuoka, groaned without looking up. "y/n's number," he muttered. inuoka, who was watching kenma play, glanced up to his seniors with interest.
yaku's eyes widened, and a slow smile spread across his face like a proud mom. "no way, really?" impressed and curious.
kuroo nodded, "we talked on the bus. i invited her to come to our match.
yaku patted his back and lev who was on the side gave him a thumbs up.
kuroo then gathered everyone's attention, clapping his hands loudly. "let's make sure to win," he said, voice filled with determination.
nobuyaki kai teased him "inspired, huh?" he teased.
