The Only Exception – Part one -

I had heard the gossip for days, there was a new kid. I didn’t live in a small town or anything, so usually a new kid was no big deal. But apparently there was something different about this one, he was an exception.

“He was in my math class you know, he sat right in front of me,” said my best friend, Tammy. “He is totally hot, but the way he looks at you—” she shivered and closed her eyes, “There’s is just something off about him. I can’t explain it.”

I rolled my eyes, “Tammy, I think you’re just overreacting.”

“I’m not!”She protested, “Ask anybody and they will say the exact same thing.”

“I think everybody just needs to calm down.” I said picking at the grass by my feet. “We get tons of transfers every year; I just don’t see what makes this kid any different.”

“Wait until you see him though Kate, he’s huge! Like huge, huge.” I had heard so many different things about the mysterious new kid. Jake Ivory said that the new kid had growled at him. And Sarah from my calculus class claimed she saw him punch a hole through his desk. I laughed at the thought; high school was full of ridiculous rumours.

“Well thank god I am over the flu, I can’t wait to see him in person,” I said dryly. A few seconds later Tammy’s brother came out of the house jingling his keys in his hands.

“Let’s go girls; we don’t want to be late.” Kyle usually drove us because being sixteen neither of us had a car yet.

“Kyle tell Kate about that new kid!” said Tammy as she jumped into the front seat.

Kyle rolled his eyes, “I wish everyone would shut up about him.”

“Thank you! Finally someone who feels the same way I do!” I exclaimed. Kyle winked at me before pulling out of the driveway. Within minutes we were slamming our doors as we jumped out of Kyle’s car.

“Thanks Kyle!” Tammy and I chorused in unison. We walked into the school, happily chatting away about simple subjects. The bell rang and therefore put a damper on or conversation.

“I guess I’ll see you at lunch,” I said to Tammy as we parted ways. She managed a smile at me before she was swept away in the crowd. I elbowed my way through the people and finally made it to my English class.

I walked with my head down trying to avoid the binders that were littered all around the classroom. My forehead hit something hard and I bounced backwards a few steps before falling on my bum. A few kids snickered at me but it was nothing too embarrassing. I looked up expecting to see a wall but all I saw was a massive dark haired boy glaring down at me.

His expression seemed to soften as it landed on my face and a weird tingle spread through my body as he looked at me. He mumbled something under my breath too fast for me to understand.

“Aren’t you going to help me up?” at the sound of my voice his hard expression returned. He just huffed and turned away. For a big guy he moved quite gracefully through the crowded classroom. I set my jaw to the side and stood up, brushing myself off angrily. What kind of guy knocks someone over and then doesn’t help them back up?

I looked over to see him staring at me from across the room. I glared and he glared back. Even with a glare I still got that weird tingle... I stomped across the classroom and slumped into my seat. I started doodling on my binder, fighting the urge to look over at the strange boy. It was hot in the stuffy classroom so I reached into my pocket for a hair tie. I just finished throwing my blonde hair up as our teacher started the lesson.
