"What do you mean your leaving!" Tori cried her eyes watering and her bottom lip beginning to tremble.
She stood in my doorway watching me pack my few belongings, my lip twitched in annoyance. She had been there for the past few hours whining at me about how 'I couldnt go away', 'Who would beat up the bullies at her school' or 'Help her throw rotten eggs at Marons house'.
"Tori" I moaned dropping my head forward and closing my eyes.
I didnt need her telling me all the things I would miss most, I didnt know how long this would take. But the payout was too high to ignore, I- No, my family deserved what He offered. I pulled the string on the top of the bag lifting it up and swinging it over my shoulder, I turned to look at her and scowled. Her bottom lip trembled as she gave me the saddest look a little sister could give. Her eyes had gone round and sparkled with unshed tears.
"Why do you have to go?" she cried.
I smiled striding across my room to her in the doorway, I placed my hand atop her head and ruffled her hair softly.
"Don't worry," I crouched down dropping my bag to the floor, I took her small hands in mine running my thumb over her soft knuckles. I swallowed my own sadness and forced a smile on my lips, I looked up into her eyes, "When I come back, I promise everything will be better." With that I stood lifting my bag with a trembling hand.
I walked down the hallway entering the kitchen where my mother and father stood waiting for me. My shoulders straightened and I cleared my throat taking the final step into the room. My father turned tired old eyes up to me, a smile creasing his withered and tanned face. I had alot of my fathers looks, the golden blond hair, golden skin, When I was younger people used to call me the golden boy. But looks can be deceiving.
"Father" I nodded towards him turning to look at my mother, "Mother" I whispered my voice fading away.
I couldnt stand this, I had to get going now. The sooner I left the sooner I would get the stone and be back to collect my dues.
"Jay, Here" I watched my father move across the room holding out his leather vest, it was weathered and worn, but some of the sturdiest material I had ever seen.
It had been cooked by the sun and chilled by the sea so many times it had nearly become armour. The leather string that crisscrossed up the front lay open. This was my fathers fishing vest, it had protected him from the sharp rocks, storms, giant fish, even a few spears that I had wrongly aimed. The bag dropped heavily to the kitchen floor as my arms stiffened at my sides.
"Father you dont-"
"Take it Jay, It kept me safe, and now it will keep you safe" He said nodding his head, he opened the vest up for me.
I swallowed the lump in the back of my throat and stepped forward turning around and slipping my arms through the holes feelings the sturdy material slid over my dirty white shirt. My mother moved around front of me and very nimble slid the thread criss-cross through the corresponding holes and tying it in place tightly. Her thin hands ran down my chest and her eyes began to water.
"Be careful, and remember to come home" She whispered in a shaking voice.
"I'll be fine." I assured her, wrapping my arms around her, giving her one last hug.
