The boy couldn't help but feel sorry for himself as he stood there, pale and sweaty, not exactly presenting his best self. Despite his discomfort, Nathaniel Sinclair maintained a polite smile as he addressed the two of them. The girl appeared to be a proper young lady, adhering to all the rules and protocols expected of her. She seemed different from some of her American counterparts, although there were certainly similarities in how Americans sought to emulate Europeans. "Yes, I am Nathaniel Sinclair," he admitted with a weary sigh. "I must confess, I am quite tired. The voyage lasted a month, and it was honestly the most dreadful trip I've ever endured. I had hoped for a bit of sunshine upon arriving here."
He paused to take in the grandeur of the house before him. It was enormous, resembling a royal mansion, although he had no firsthand experience with such opulence. "The sun here is rather pale, and the sky a bit dull, but I find it rather charming," he remarked, trying to put a positive spin on things. "My father is of Scottish origins—actually, my grandfather was Scottish. Tell me, is there to be a party or event? I noticed many people with invitations, and they seemed quite thrilled."
Despite his reservations about the place and its inhabitants, Nathaniel couldn't suppress his curiosity about British life and was eager to explore the city for himself. Jasmine looked up at Nathaniel as she smiled and nodded. "I am sure you will come to enjoy your stay here," she said warmly. She listened attentively as Nathaniel spoke about his voyage, her desire for travel resonating with his words. While she had always stayed in London, Jasmine harbored a longing to explore new places and experience different cultures.
When Nathaniel inquired about a party or event, Jasmine's eyes lit up with excitement. "Tonight, there is to be a ball!" she exclaimed. "Everyone always gets excited when that time comes." She smiled warmly at Nathaniel. "And you are welcome to come with, that is if you're feeling well-rested by then. I'm sure my family wouldn't mind you coming along?" she offered graciously. Despite her reservations about attending balls, Jasmine was genuinely curious about Nathaniel and hoped he would join them.
Nathaniel was stunned by the opulence of the place, so grand and unlike anything he had ever seen. He couldn't help but imagine his own family in such surroundings, his parents and siblings bustling about while his father discussed matters that weighed heavily on his mind. His reverie was interrupted by the lady speaking to him, to whom Nathaniel smiled gratefully. "I hope so, but I have been welcomed in the sweetest of ways. I am thankful." The thought of a British feast intrigued him, and his mind began to wander once more. He imagined it would be vastly different from the feasts back home. "I would love to come, Sir," he turned to the lord of the house with a smile on his lips. "Would it be fine for me to come?" he asked, awaiting the lord's response.
"Of course, Nathaniel. I'm sure it will be of great interest to you. Do you have feasts over there as well? In your country?" The lord's question caught Nathaniel off guard, and for some reason, he found it amusing that he didn't refer to the United States of America. Were the British still harboring resentment towards them? Nathaniel thanked him with a tip of his hat before turning his gaze back to the girl. "It seems I will come. But please do tell me, how do gentlemen dress here? I don't think it should be much different from the United States," he asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Nathaniel nodded appreciatively as Jasmine offered to show him around and explain the customs of the upcoming event. He followed her lead, giving a polite nod to her father before following Jasmine out into the hall. As they ascended the stairs to his room, Jasmine explained how gentlemen dressed for events in England, assuring him that it wasn't very different from the United States. Nathaniel listened attentively, grateful for her guidance.
When Jasmine asked about life in the United States, Nathaniel couldn't help but smile at her curiosity. "Life in the United States is quite different from here in England," he began, pondering how best to describe it to someone who had never left London. "We have bustling cities like New York and a vast countryside filled with natural beauty," he continued, trying to paint a picture of his homeland. "There's a sense of freedom and opportunity that comes with living in America, although it's not without its challenges."
Nathaniel paused, realizing how fortunate he was to have the chance to experience life in another country. "It's a diverse and ever-changing place, full of energy and innovation," he concluded, hoping to convey some of the essence of America to Jasmine. Nathaniel couldn't help but feel a surge of relief at the warm welcome he received in London. His fears of being treated as an unwanted guest or being cast aside melted away in the face of such hospitality.
As he walked alongside Jasmine, he found himself intrigued by her bright, curious eyes and the determined expression on her delicate face. She seemed to embody a mix of grace and strength that captivated him. Listening to her explanation of British fashion and customs, Nathaniel realized just how different things were from back home. "It truly depends," he agreed, nodding along. "Some still cling to older styles, while others embrace European fashion."
He chuckled softly at her observation about American feasts being less formal and louder. "That sounds about right," he remarked a hint of amusement in his voice. "Politics tends to play a big role in our gatherings as well. My father is a Federalist, so he's always butting heads with someone." Nathaniel paused, reflecting on the political landscape back home. "There's a constant tug-of-war between the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans, each advocating for their vision of the future," he explained. "It's a never-ending battle of ideologies." He then turned his gaze to Jasmine, curious to hear about the customs and traditions of British society. "What about here? Please, do tell me," he urged, eager to learn more about his new surroundings.
