Jasmine gazed up at Nathaniel with a soft smile, her eyes reflecting warmth and kindness. She had a natural tendency to smile at people, and Nathaniel found himself drawn to her genuine demeanor. He nodded in response to her words, grateful for her encouragement. "I am sure you will," she affirmed, her smile growing slightly. "You look rather handsome." Her compliment caught him off guard, and he felt a faint warmth spread across his cheeks. Nathaniel offered a shy smile in return, feeling a flutter of excitement in his chest at her words. "Yes, we should get going," Jasmine agreed, bringing them back to the present moment. Nathaniel nodded, grateful for her guidance. He knew that her family had already departed in one carriage, leaving behind a separate one for them.
Once settled inside the carriage, Nathaniel took a seat across from Jasmine, feeling a mix of nerves and anticipation bubbling within him. Her question about his nerves prompted him to pause and reflect. "Yes, a bit," he admitted honestly, his voice tinged with a hint of uncertainty. "This is my first event since arriving today, and it's quite different from anything I've experienced in the United States." He trailed off, realizing he was beginning to ramble. "But I'm grateful for your company," he added quickly, hoping to convey his appreciation for her presence without stumbling over his words.
At her sudden compliment, Nathaniel felt his cheeks grow warm, a telltale sign of his blush. He glanced down for a moment before meeting Jasmine's gaze once more. "My lady, your beauty reflects on me. That is why I look fine in your eyes," he replied, his tone sincere as he kissed her hand again. He studied her attentively, recognizing her as a kind person and a good friend, but he knew that courting her would be unwise. After all, she was graciously hosting him in her home, and it wouldn't be appropriate to pursue romantic intentions.
Offering her his arm, Nathaniel guided Jasmine towards the waiting carriage. "I am curious to see how the Brits will react. The war that my father fought wasn't that long ago; those who fought in it must still be alive. I believe that many won't be thrilled to see an American here," he remarked a hint of amusement in his voice. As they entered the carriage and made their way through the crowded streets, Nathaniel couldn't help but marvel at the beauty of London, so different from the bustling streets of New York.
"It must be a grand event," he observed, noting the abundance of carriages following their path. "It seems I've arrived on an important day." His excitement grew as they approached their destination, the houses growing larger and the trees meticulously shaped into various forms. As the carriage turned, revealing the magnificent palace before them, Nathaniel couldn't help but shake his head in awe. "That's... I have no words. It's so beautiful," he murmured, his eyes wide with wonder.
As the carriage came to a stop, Nathaniel stepped out first, offering his hand to assist Jasmine. "My lady," he said, a sense of admiration evident in his voice as he guided her towards the grand entrance of the palace. Jasmine smiled in response to Nathaniel's words, a hint of uncertainty in her expression. "I am not sure. But they probably won't be," she agreed, acknowledging the potential tension his presence might stir among some of the attendees. As they settled into the carriage, she took a seat across from him, her hands folded neatly in her lap as she gazed out at the passing scenery.
"It is," she affirmed with a soft smile, nodding in agreement as Nathaniel commented on the grandeur of the event. "When events like this come around, everyone comes," she added, her eyes alight with excitement. As they approached the palace, she couldn't help but giggle at Nathaniel's wonder-filled reaction. "It is," she agreed once more, her smile widening as the carriage came to a stop. With Nathaniel's assistance, Jasmine stepped out of the carriage, her hand resting gently in his as they made their way towards the entrance of the palace. "Just wait till you see all the decorations inside," she remarked with a playful grin, knowing that the opulent decorations never failed to impress.
As they approached the grand entrance of the palace, Nathaniel couldn't help but wonder how he would be received. He, the son of a hero of the revolution, was now stepping foot into a palace where the very monarchs his father fought against resided. He sensed the curious gazes of onlookers, their interest piqued by his presence alongside the well-known Lady Teaton. "People are staring. Do you know them?" he asked, gesturing towards a woman accompanied by three younger ladies, likely her daughters. The Featheringtons, their name floating in the air as the mother of the trio made her way towards them. "Lady Teaton, you look ravishing," the lady remarked, her gaze sweeping over Jasmine before settling on Nathaniel with a scrutinizing intensity. Nathaniel shifted uncomfortably under her scrutiny, unsure of whether he should introduce himself or wait for Jasmine to do so.
Inside the palace, Nathaniel's breath caught in his throat as he beheld the breathtaking sight before him. Flowers adorned the ceiling, their petals interspersed with diamonds and illuminated by the soft glow of scented candles. He nearly let out an expletive in awe but caught himself just in time, clearing his throat awkwardly as he tried to compose himself under the watchful eyes of the Featheringtons. Jasmine smiled inwardly as they walked, sensing the curious glances directed their way. She nodded in response to Nathaniel's observation. "I know quite a lot of people here," she confirmed. "You're new in town, and they know you're from the United States, so they are curious," she explained, offering him insight into the attention they were receiving. As they approached the Featheringtons, Jasmine maintained her composure, returning Portia's scrutinizing gaze with a polite smile.
"Thank you," she responded graciously to Portia's compliment before turning her attention to the introductions. "This is Nathaniel Sinclair. He is going to be staying with me and my family while he's here in London," she explained, introducing Nathaniel to the Featherington matriarch. "This is Portia Featherington, and her three daughters, Prudence, Philippa, and Penelope," she added, gesturing towards each of them in turn. Her smile widened as she addressed Penelope, extending a warmth that reflected her fondness for the young woman.
Taking a moment to survey the bustling ballroom, Jasmine's eyes sparkled with delight at the sight of the elegantly adorned surroundings. It seemed as though most of London had turned out for the ball, a testament to its grandeur. Jasmine couldn't help but admire the meticulous decorations, her appreciation evident in the soft smile that graced her lips.
