Eliza's POV
I was doing my best to remain stress free, but even Seth was extremely tense and hardly saying anything all afternoon. Now it was dark and the party was still going long after we sung happy birthday to Kayla two hours prior. Pack celebrations were just like that, we partied until we fell asleep, usually in the den and usually having to bring the pups back to bed by the scruff, in order not to wake them from the random places they'd slump and slumber.
But there's no upbeat energy from Seth and I. I couldn't enjoy Kayla's birthday. I've asked the nanny to put my smallest ones to sleep, so I have my hands free, but I'm still worried sick.
Seth and I were both quiet with a flood of memories we let go of long ago, but now they're fresh once more while trying to process what Orpheus promised us. He told us tonight he'd have our first answer.
Orpheus had walked into the woods, where I saw a glowing pair of blood-red eyes.
I recognised them immediately – it's Onyx. He was the Lycan that scented Seth's soul and confirmed he wasn't rotting with sin. Now I understand why Orpheus will have answers for us, he had a direct link to Onyx. And Onyx had the nose to sniff out the bad guys.
However, as Orpheus strolls back from the tree line a few minutes later, coming back toward our firepit and bypassing the playful pups... he doesn't look like he has answers at all.
Seth grabs my hand and we share a sombre look.
We're about to be disappointed.
"Hey, we're back again."
I nearly jump out of my skin when I hear Sabrina whisper behind me.
I turn to see her grinning with wet blonde hair, fresh out of a shower with Erebon, who's wearing a stolen pair of Seth's black tracksuits. No top though, so we all see the claw marks over his skin. I manage a smile for Sabrina, happy to know she was bonding well with her new mate.
Sabrina and Erebon walk into our circle and stand near the fire, warming up their hands.
"Any news?" Erebon keeps his arm around Sabrina's waist, while we don't respond personally.
We don't know. But... Orpheus is back now – and he'll relay what he's found.
"Not good," Orpheus snarls under his breath as he stands in front of the fire, next to his brother. He shoots a hard look our way, Seth stands up immediately and walks to the other side of the pit.
"What did you find out?" Seth asks, "Are we in danger?"
"Right now, probably not, but I can't say for sure," Orpheus shakes his head, "Someone here is using spells to cover their stench to make them untraceable – this only happens when someone is highly skilled and experienced in getting away with sinful acts. They've coveted a witch to mask their rot, it's that bad. In other words, you're dealing with someone who premeditates many crimes, gets away with it, and knows how to cover all their tracks."
"So you haven't helped at all," Seth growls out, "We're stuck where we always were."
"Someone here," Orpheus growls back an objection, "Is bad enough to warrant your notice. Make a list."
"Alright," Seth lowers his tone, "So I'm led to believe, from everyone I trust who are attending my daughter's birthday party, someone here is involved in that act against Eliza?"
"I can't confirm that yet," Orpheus frowns, "I'm sorry, all I know is someone here is covering their very dirty tracks."
"I'll make a list then," Seth shakes his head, "How do you have connections with Lycans?"
