What a moron. He seriously wants me to stay? Why? So he can kill me in my sleep? Is he going to get revenge? Attack me? Does he think I'm stupid? I know how this works. He'll make me drop my guard, and then he'll screw me over. Everyone does it to everyone so why would he be any different? Short answer. He isn't.
"It's good to see you walking,"Mary remarked. Why can't everyone just leave me alone?
Ignoring her, I walked even faster, getting the hell out of here before someone does something. Trust absolutely nobody. That's how you live. That's how you survive, and I have. If I start thinking differently somebody will do something.
Keeping an eye on everyone around me, I searched for the slightest thing off while secretly gripping my knife in my jacket pocket.
Not looking back, I ducked as I made my way out of the mountains. Keeping myself close to them, I held my breath while taking my time so that I didn't get caught.
"What are you-"
"Don't try me!"I demanded, pulling my weapon out and pointing it at Aris."I'm not going to hurt you,"He lied, putting his hands up.
"You think I'm dumb, don't you?"
"No. Just a little on edge,"He trailed off, trying to take a step closer. Going back, I still didn't take my eyes off of him. Stepping back, he kept his hands behind his head. "Listen. Whatever you've gone through, I'm sorry, but nobody's going to hurt you. You can trust me."
"Trust? Trust you? Trust is for fools."
"I didn't hurt you that night, and I easily could have. It would have taken no effort, but I didn't. I didn't want to. I just wanted you to not attack me, but I wasn't going to kill you, and neither will anyone else."
"You'll kill me now. You'll get revenge. That's the only reason that you want me to stay."
"No. I just don't want something to happen to you."
"Why would you care? I'm nobody's problem but my own. I've gotten myself this far. Why wouldn't I make it?"
"How old are you?"
"Why do you want to know that?"
"Just tell me how old you are,"He repeated.
"I'm eighteen,"I answered, narrowing my eyes at him.
"You're eighteen. You've been doing this for eighteen years. Do you really want to do it for another?"
"You'll kill me, and I won't be able to try,"I accused.
"If I wanted you dead, I would have done it by now. It's just you and I, and nobody would ever know,"He reasoned, slowly stepping forward again. Going back, I found myself tripping over a branch, sending me down and dropping my knife somewhere. Scooting back, I kept my fists over my face, waiting for something. Anything.
"Are you okay?"He asked, putting his hand out. Going back again, I stared at him as just looked at me while still extending his arm. "It's okay. I won't hurt you,"He repeated.
Hesitantly taking his hand, the second he helped me up I backed away again.
"You've been through a lot, haven't you?"
"My life is none of your business."
"It could be, if we became friends?"
"What don't you get? I don't do friends. I'm not even supposed to be close to anyone."
"How come?"
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe the fact that I've got people that want my blood? The way I tend to hold weapons to people's heads? The sarcasm? All those things nobody wants to deal with?"I listed.
"Well, I want to be your friend."
"And I want enough money to keep safe and to not be the way I am, but here we are."
"Well, I can sort of help you. I can teach you about having fri-"
"For the thousandth time, we are not friends,"I groaned."Will you at least come back with me?"
"I don't wan-"
"Please?"He pleaded. Looking him up and down, I sighed as I made my decision.
