Nine

The bell rang, signaling the end of the school day.

Clara watched with a heavy heart as Marlene walked towards the student council office, the weight of their secret clinging to them like a suffocating cloak.

Torn between fear and a fierce protectiveness of Marlene, Clara decided to follow her at a safe distance.

As she rounded a corner, she bumped into someone, sending her books tumbling to the floor.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry!" A friendly voice exclaimed.

Clara looked up to find a tall girl with bright green eyes and a warm smile bending down to help her gather her belongings.

"No worries,"

Clara mumbled, her cheeks flushed.

"It was my fault completely."

The girl stood up, handing Clara a book.

"I'm Sarah, by the way. New here. And you are?"

"Clara," she replied,

a flicker of curiosity sparking in her eyes.

Sarah was different from the popular crowd at Schiller Gymnasium

There was a genuine warmth in her gaze that made Clara feel instantly at ease.

Suddenly, Clara's phone buzzed.

It was a text from Marlene:

Merlene: "Meet me at the cafe by the park in 10 minutes. Please be careful."

Clara's heart lurched It sounded like Marlene's meeting with Max hadn't gone well.

"Hey, everything alright?"

Sarah asked, noticing Clara's sudden change in expression.

"Uh, yeah,"

Clara stammered, stuffing her phone into her pocket.

"I just remembered I have to meet someone. Nice meeting you, Sarah!"

With a hasty goodbye, Clara rushed out of the schoolyard, a knot of worry tightening in her stomach.

Maybe, just maybe, this encounter with Sarah could offer a glimmer of hope amidst the growing darkness.
