The following days were a whirlwind of hushed whispers, pointed stares, and stolen glances.
The news of Clara and Marlene's performance at the talent show had spread like wildfire through Schiller Gymnasium.
Some students offered hesitant congratulations, others avoided them altogether.
The most unexpected reaction came from Finn.
He hadn't spoken to Clara since their encounter on the rooftop, but his presence seemed to follow her everywhere.
He'd linger by her locker during class changes, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a brooding silence.
One afternoon, as Clara sat beneath the oak tree, lost in thought, Finn approached her.
Hesitantly, he sat down beside her, kicking at a loose pebble on the ground.
"Hey,"
he mumbled, his gaze fixed on his shoes.
Clara glanced at him, unsure of how to respond.
"Hey,"
she finally replied, her voice tentative.
A long silence stretched between them, broken only by the chirping of birds in the nearby trees.
Finally, Finn spoke, his voice barely a whisper.
"I... I just wanted to apologize for the other night. I shouldn't have barged in like that."
Clara appreciated his apology.
"It's okay,
she said, offering him a reassuring smile.
"It was a surprise for everyone."
Finn nodded, his eyes meeting hers for a fleeting moment.
"I guess I... I had a feeling there might be something going on between you and Marlene."
Clara's stomach lurched.
Was Finn going to confess his feelings?
"We're just friends,"
she said quickly, perhaps a little too defensively.
Finn seemed to deflate slightly.
"Oh,"
he mumbled, his gaze dropping back to the ground.
"Right. Friends."
A moment of awkward silence followed.
Clara felt a pang of guilt.
Finn seemed genuinely hurt, and she hated being the cause of it.
"You're a great guy, Finn,"
she said finally, trying to ease the tension.
"Really."
A flicker of hope ignited in Finn's eyes.
"Maybe we could... hang out sometime? Just as friends, of course."
Clara hesitated.
The idea of spending time alone with Finn, especially after everything that had happened with Marlene, felt wrong.
But seeing the disappointment cloud his features, she found herself saying,
"Sure. Maybe."
