The following weeks were a whirlwind of stolen moments and nervous glances.

Clara and Marlene navigated the treacherous social landscape of Schiller Gymnasium, their secret love blossoming under the surface.

They snuck in quick kisses during bathroom breaks, lingered by their lockers a beat too long, and shared cryptic messages during class, their hearts pounding with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.

Max began, his voice laced with suspicion,

“anything you want to tell me about you and Marlene lately?”

Clara’s stomach lurched.

Max’s words confirmed her worst fear – he was onto them.

Max snorted.

“Yeah, right. Friends don’t look at each other like that.”

Clara felt trapped.

Should she lie? Confess?

Just as she was about to speak, Marlene walked past their table, her eyes flitting nervously between them.

“Hey, Marlene,”

Max called out, his voice a touch too loud.

“Mind joining us for a second?”

Marlene froze, her face pale.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a silent plea in her eyes.
