Glenn is holding Madison as they wait for their turn to submit their blood for testing.
"Where are we?" Madison asks groggily as she wakes up.
"We're in the CDC. We got in, but the doctor said we have to submit blood to see if we are infected," Glenn explains to her.
Madison becomes wide awake, hating having her blood drawn. "But if we were infected, we would be sick by now, right?" she asks Glenn, confusion evident in her eyes.
"He just wants to be sure, nothing to worry about," he reassures her as she lays her head back on his shoulder, still feeling sleepy.
After they all have their blood drawn, Jenner leads them to the table to eat. Madison really wants this place to work. She looks around the room and sees everyone smiling. Finally, she can relax and not worry about the walkers. They were safe here, or so she thought.
After everyone finishes eating and after Shane ruins the mood, they begin heading to the rooms. "In this hallway are the rooms. There's also a room for the kids to play in. Just don't plug any games in and be gentle with the hot water," Jenner tells the group.
"Hot water?" Glenn asks, surprised and happy.
"That's what the man said," T-Dog replies, smiling.
"Come on, Madi," Glenn says, holding the door open for Madison to step in.
"Thank you," she says, giving Glenn a smile which he returns.
"You can shower first. I'll go after you're done," Glenn says, slurring his words a bit.
'He must have drunk too much,' she thinks.
Madison grabs some underwear and shorts from her backpack. She doesn't have any clean shirts, so she opens Glenn's bag and takes a dark blue shirt. After taking off her clothes, she looks at herself in the mirror. She has become even skinnier than she was before the outbreak. Her cheeks are more hollow, and her ribs are more visible. She also notices she has a lot of blood on her.
In the shower, she scrubs herself thoroughly, getting all the blood off her face and body. After that, she washes her hair with shampoo, scrubbing it well to make sure her hair is perfectly clean.
Once she's done, she dries herself with a towel and puts on her underwear, shorts, and Glenn's shirt. She finds a brush in a drawer under the sink. As she tries to brush her long, thick hair, the brush keeps getting stuck. Her arms are too short, so with a sigh, she grabs the brush and walks out of the bathroom, heading over to Glenn.
"Can you brush my hair? It's fine if you just want to shower. I ca—" she rambles, but Glenn cuts her off.
"Of course, just sit down," he says with a kind smile, pointing to the spot in front of him.
"Tell me if it hurts," he says. Madison can hear in his voice that he is drunk. He begins brushing her hair as gently as he can, not wanting to hurt the little girl.
"Did you have family before the outbreak?" Glenn asks Madison. He wouldn't have asked if he were sober, but in his drunken state, he doesn't think about how sensitive the subject might be for her.
"No, I didn't, but I did have one friend," she says, getting a flashback of the day her mom was murdered. She also knows Glenn most likely won't remember the conversation because he is drunk. "Her name is Melissa. She is two years older than me. I've known her since I was three. At the start of the apocalypse, I was playing football with some kids, and she was somewhere else..." she stopped herself from saying more after that.
After she says that, Glenn brings her into a big hug, wrapping his arms around her. Madison silently cries onto Glenn's chest, thinking about her mom and Melissa. She misses them so much.
After staying like that for a little while, Madison breaks the silence. "You should shower, dude. You smell worse than a walker," she says, giggling.
"How dare you say that," Glenn replies with a fake hurt look on his face, making Madison laugh even more. Glenn can't hold back his smile; he loves seeing Madison happy, even if he is somewhat drunk.
Glenn comes out of the shower and notices Madison lying on the ground, reading a comic book and laughing at what she reads. He smiles at the sight, wanting to protect Madison from the outside world and preserve her childish innocence.
"It's time to sleep, Madison," Glenn says as he walks into the room.
Madison yawns and nods in response, feeling tired and wanting to sleep. "You can have the bed; the couch is perfect for me," Madison says to Glenn, knowing he needs the bed more than her.
Glenn doesn't respond and just gets into the bed, almost immediately falling asleep. But Madison can't. The couch and the bed are opposite each other in the room, but when they slept in Glenn's tent, they always lay next to each other. Madison finds it more comforting knowing Glenn is laying next to her; she trusts Glenn.
After 10 minutes of not being able to fall asleep, she stands up and makes her way over to the bed. Glenn is laying on the left side of the bed, so she goes and lays on the right side. In a little while, Madison falls asleep.
