Maryam Chaudhary
*********************"Kiske saath aur kaha gayi thi yeh?", Haider asked as stood beside Azaan, curious to know more about Maria's whereabouts.
"Woh, Maria madam, Asad bhai ke saath movie dekhne gayi thi", Ali said interrupting the conversation and providing more context to Haider's question.
Maria held my hand even tighter, her nails digging into the back of my palm, the intensity of her grip made me wince, but I didn't pull away.
"Kyu gayi thi tum uske saath movie dekhne?", Azaan asked as he tried to pull Maria from behind me.
"Main akeli nahi gayi thi bhai, Rida and Dania bhi mere saath thi", she said as she hiccups.
"You will not be seen around Asad from now on", Haider sternly declared to Maria. Maria in response, nodded nervously while hiccupping and adjusting her glasses.
"Tum teeno toh boht hi badtameez, galeez aur jallad kism ke ho", I expressed, I then held Maria's hand tightly and walked away from the garden with her, leaving the others behind.
"I'm telling the truth, bhabhi. I didn't go alone; my friends were with me", Maria through hiccups, removing her glasses and embracing me.
"Hey, please stop crying. I believe you", I reassured her, hugging her tightly and rubbing her back as she sobbed even harder. The emotional moment brought us closer together, strengthening our bond of friendship.
As I gently held her face in my hands, I asked her, "will you come with me to my house? Your controlling and annoying brother's won't be there".
"Okay", she replied with a nod, while rubbing her nose.
As I walked towards the parking area with Mari, I held her hand tightly as she continued to hiccup. She was crying and I didn't know how to make her stop. Honestly, I'm terrible at consoling people. But I do know how to appreciate and enjoy them. However, it broke my heart to see Maria in such a crying state.
We approached the car and I noticed Asad and Danish in a deep conversation. Maria and I joined them and I could see Asad looking at Maria, who was still hiccuping beside me.
"Why are you crying, Maria?", Danish asked as he came over and gently wiped away her tears.
"I'm sorry for not taking permission before going out. I swear I won't do it again", Maria said, looking at Danish as streaming down her face.
"Kaha gayi thi tum akele", he asked in confusion.
"Oh, she went out with her friends, to the mall", I said, trying to cover for Maria. She gave me a grateful smile as Danish looked at me narrowing his eyes.
"Don't worry, Maria. We all need some alone time every now and then. Just be careful next time", Danish said, pulling his sister into a hug.
"I will, and I'm sorry again", Maria whispered, hugging her brother tightly. I couldn't help but feel a surge of warmth for the bond between them. After the hug, Danish wiped away her tears and gave her a kiss on the forehead.
"Lets go and do something fun to lighten up your mood", he suggested, taking her hand. As we made our way to the car, I couldn't help but notice how comforting Danish was towards Maria. He had a soft side that I had never seen before and I found myself liking it more and more.
We all got into the car, with Danish in the passenger seat and Asad driving. Maria and I sat in the back, as he started the car, I received a notification on my phone. It was an update from my favorite story, but I knew I couldn't read it then and there. I needed a calm environment, a cup of coffee, and lights closed to really dive into the story.
So, I closed my phone and rested it on my lap, looking out of the window. The city lights passed by as we drove towards our destination. I couldn't help feel grateful for this outing, and I couldn't deny the attraction I was starting to feel towards Danish.
As I turned my head away from the window, my gaze landed on the rear view mirror where I saw Asad looking at Maria. Maria, in return, was glaring back at him with intensity, her eyes narrowed and lips twitched in a look of disdain. It was clear that there was some sort of tension between them, something brewing beneath the surface that piqued my curiosity. I couldn't help but feel excited at the prospect of uncovering more about their relationship dynamics.
Just as Asad was locked in this silent exchange with Maria, he failed to notice the rickshaw in front of him and ended up bumping into it. The sudden impact caused the car to come to a screeching halt, jolting us all forward in a swift and unexpected moment.
"Mujhe aisa kyu lag rha hai ke tumhari nazrein aur dimag thikane par nahi hai?", Danish questioned Asad, pulling him by his shirt.
"Aisa nahi hai bhai, woh bas sar dard hai", Asad nervously stammered while gulping his saliva. Both of them exited the car, with Danish glaring at Asad as they spoke to the rickshaw man who Asad had accidentally bumped into.
"Bhabhi mujhe darr lag rha hai", Maria said visibly shaking and biting her nails.
"Kyu?", I asked as I turned totally towards her on the seat.
"Mujhe aisa feel ho rha hai ke bhai Asad ko maarenge", she said as tears started falling from her eyes.
"Kyu maarenge woh, paagal thori hai", I asked, as I wiped her tears.
But I know how much pagal he is
"Can I ask you something, Maria?", I asked as I held her hand in mine. She nodded her head as she looked at me with teary eyes.
"Do you love Asad?", I asked, seeing her blinking nervously.
"Yes", she whispered softly, her lower lip caught between her teeth to muffle the sounds of her cry.
"But he doesn't love me", she said with a sad smile and tears streaming down her cheeks.
"How can you say that?", I asked, noticing Danish and Asad approaching the car.
"Because he is already engaged", she replied, her voice filled with a heartbreak and resignation.
"Who is engaged?", Danish asked as he sat in the passenger seat while wearing his seat belt.
"Zaarib is getting engaged", I said with a nervous smile.
"Who is zaarib now?", Danish inquired, turning his head to face me.
"My boyfriend".
