Maryam Chaudhary
*********************I walked towards the sink, I splashed water on my face in an attempt to control my emotions. I wasn't sure why, but I was feeling scared and I didn't want to be in this house anymore. I just wanted to go home. After wiping the face with my pallu, I turned to grab the chai tray from the counter and headed towards garden area.
Azaan was already sitting there, and a smirk appeared on his face as he saw me coming towards him with the chai. I served everyone their chai and sat next to Maria, trying to stay as far away from Azaan's intense gaze as possible. It was like he was watching me like a hawk, making me feel incredibly uncomfortable. And to add to my discomfort, this saree I was wearing wasn't helping at all.
I wanted to change into something more comfortable, but dadi jaan had told me that we were going to her friend's house for dinner. Apparently, her friend couldn't make it to our house due to some reasons. So, she had insisted that i don't change my clothes. But, I wasn't interested in going to some stranger's house, all I wanted was for Danish to come and take me home. I just didn't feel comfortable here at all.
As I sat there lost in my thoughts, Maria asked me, "Bhabhi did something happen in the kitchen?", I could feel the anger rising in my voice as I responded, "Azaan was talking nonsense", Azaan just sat there, sipping his chai, titling his head back and watching me. His intense gaze was making me feel even more uneasy. I couldn't wait to go home, away from this house, and away from Azaan's piercing eyes.
I couldn't hold back my tears as I whispered to myself, "Dani, please come to your jaan, she needs you", I took a sip of my chai, trying to calm myself down. Maria looked at me sympathetically and said, "I'm sorry on behalf of Azaan bhai. I don't know what has gotten into him. He's acting strange for a week now".
I shook my head and replied, "whatever the reason, it doesn't give him the right to treat me like that. I'm his brother's wife. He shouldn't talk to me in that manner", Maria agreed, understanding my frustration.
Just then, we heard footsteps approaching. I turned my head and saw Danish coming towards me, while talking to his brother's. My heart skipped a beat as he sat down beside me on the chair. "Assalamualaikum", I greeted him with a smile. "Walaikumassalam", he replied, taking the chai cup from my hand and sipping it. Maria excused herself, giving us privacy, I thanked her with a nod.
"You look pretty", Danish said, making me blush and look at him with a shy smile. "Thank you", I murmured, leaning my head on his shoulder. With Danish by my side, I didn't feel scared or uncomfortable anymore. I knew he would protect me from any harm.
"Lets go home", I said as I looked at him, who was immersed in his phone and sipping chai.
"No, we'll be here for a week", he replied, still focused on his phone and not making eye contact with me.
"I want to go home, i dont want to be here", I said, as I snatched his phone from his hand, making him glare at me. I looked at his phone to see him texting Katherine. "Why are you texting her?", I asked, glancing up at him from the phone.
"Why do you want to go home all of a sudden", he asked, setting his chai cup down on the table. "Because I didn't bring my clothes and I need to go to the university", I replied. "You still haven't answered my question though, why are you texting her?"
"Oh, it's nothing important, just a casual talk", he said, shrugging his shoulders. I narrowed my eyes at him, suspecting he was lying. Despite my doubts, I decided to trust him. After all, it's his life and he can talk to whoever he wants.
"Okay", I said as I handed him his phone and stood up from the chair. "Maryam", he called out my name, making me look at him. "What the hell are you wearing, sweetheart? Your whole back is on display and your curves", he said as he stood up from the chair and pulled me to him. He hugged me from behind. Every body in the garden was looking at us like they were watching a show.
