Chapter 2: Keefe

I scribbled down a couple lyrics on a piece of paper.

While I was away hiding with humans, I had picked up a few instruments.

Music now was my best coping strategy.

If only music could repair what I had ruined with Sophie.

I muttered the lyrics quickly to memorize them.

I started up the instrumental I had pre-recorded using a gadget Dex made.

I started singing, my voice cracking at first.

Then I took a breath and sang the chorus,

(The Good Part by AJR if you want to actually hear it)

"If you put this scene on a movie screen

Is it called a happy end?

If the world gets me

Where I'm supposed to be

Will I know I've made it then?

It's so hard

Can we skip to the good-"

My voice trailed off as I heard a knock on my door.

I scrambled to turn off the music and shove the papers away.

I put the gadget Dex made me in my pocket.

"C-come in." I said, pretending I hadn't been singing.

My dad hated when I sung.

But it wasn't him, it was Sophie.

"Sophie?" I didn't know whether to die of embarrassment or kill my dad.

"Uh, hi."

"How come you're here?" I asked.

"Biana is having a sleepover and she told me to invite someone else." Sophie explained quickly.

"Why me?"

"I mean you weren't my first choice."

"Ouch, Sophie."

"Ugh. Are you coming or not?"

I smiled and stuffed a couple things into a bag.

"Alrighty, I'm ready."

We walked down to the leapmaster, neither of us talking.

"Everglen." I said.

It shifted to shine a beam of light at the ground.

I grabbed Sophie's hand and pulled her into the light.

The second we arrived Sophie pulled away her hand.

I trailed after her, trying not to feel so dejected.

And of course we were the last ones to arrive.

I forced my typical Keefe smirk to be sure nobody suspected a thing.

"Sophie! Keefe!" Biana greeted us.

She glanced between me and Sophie, a smile on her face.

I shook my head and went to talk with Fitz.

Everyone noticed.

"Seriously what on earth happened?" Marella asked.

"Yeah, you guys hardly talk and Keefe hasn't called Sophie a nickname for ages." Biana agreed.

"It's nothing." I said, a bit too quick.

An awkward silence met us.

Finally Biana broke the tension, "Let play Truth or Dare!"

I stiffled a groan.

I sat next to Dex and Biana.

Sophie sat right next to Fitz.

It hurt, a lot.

We played a few rounds, luckily everything stayed far from the topic of me and Sophie.

"Keefe, Truth or Dare." Biana asked me.

"Dare." I answered.

I shot her a look that said, 'if you do anything relating to me and Sophie I will throttle you.'

She understood.

"Demonstrate a secret talent you have." Biana said.

I sighed.

"I know you have at least one." Biana said.

"Fine, alright. I can sing, I guess." The moment I said it I regretted it.

Seriously Keefe? Of all of the talents, SINGING?

"She said demonstrate." Tam added.

I glared at him.

Do that song you were singing earlier.

I jumped at Sophie's transmission.

She hadn't done it in a while.

I glanced at Sophie which totally gave away the fact she transmitted to me.

"Hey! No telepathic conversations!" Dex said.

"Fine." If I just got it over it would be better.

I grabbed the gadget out of my pocket.

"Hey isn't that the thing I made for you?" Dex asked.

"Yeah, it has the instrumental part on it." I said quietly.

Everyone stared expectantly at me.

I was about to make a fool of myself in front of everybody.
