First chapter! Woo! I put so much effort into that cover. Lol. I literally love it so much though.
___________________________________“Kiddo?” A voice called up the stairs.
“Yes, mama?” I shouted down. I know, it’s weird for a 17-year-old to call his mom ‘mama’. Bite me. I never grew out of it.“Come on downstairs!” She called. “I made breakfast!” I huffed. I loved my mom, but her cooking was…for a lack of better words? Dog shit. I would never tell her that though. From a young age I have choked down anything she served me, after all, she worked hard to put food on the table for the two of us.
After she divorced my dad…we moved away. We moved up to chicago. The scenery here was pretty enough, and the people were mostly nice to be around I suppose. The adults were nice. The kids my age were fairly the same everywhere.
I mean- there was a little less gang violence as long as I lied to myself about it's existence here, so that was something to be thankful for at the very least. I haven’t been jumped yet in chicago and I have lived here for…16 years? Yeah. 16 years. It has to be a matter of time. I heard my mom start walking up the stairs and I jumped and rushed down to meet her.
“Are you wearing your headphones again? I’ve told you not to listen to music so loud. You’re going to damage your hearing, and then you will be deafer than you already are.” She scoffed with a frown, but it quickly turned to a grin.
“Hurry on down. I made your favorite! Pancakes!” I almost threw up, but I forced a small smile.
“Yum…! I’ll be down quickly.” I turned around and grimaced. Hopefully she didn’t mistake sugar for salt again. A common prank, sure, but it definitely was not a prank when it came to her. She literally just mixes them up, it doesn’t help that she won’t put labels on the two jars.
‘I will remember next time!’
Is what she always says to me.I ran down after grabbing my school bags and throwing on some clothes for school. I had a pair of ripped black jeans and a white shirt. Bracelets decorated my wrist, and a string Choker was wrapped around my throat. I had some eyeliner under my eyes and some light pink arm warmers.
I wasn’t gothic, but I wasn’t…not gothic, you know what I mean? She smiled when she saw me and held out a plate of pancakes. They only had some burnt parts this time, it didn’t actually look that bad today! I grabbed the plate and hugged her.
Sitting down I smothered them in syrup, stuffing my face like a chipmunk and grinned. She didn’t mess up the sugar this time! I sighed with pleasure. This was the best meal I have gotten from her in a while.
“This is amazing mama.” She grinned. My mom always loved cooking, but she never listened to me when I said she should go to school for it. I mean…I’m in school! We could go to school together! That was just a childish dream of mine, but I liked to frequently indulge in such a fantasy.
I finished my breakfast and streamed before throwing my bags over my shoulder. Mom came over and kissed me on the forehead.
“Oh…you know I really wish I had your hair. It’s beautiful.” My hair was a marbled brown black and white. My dad had early greying hair, my mother had brown hair that faded to an orange color. The two gene colors had mixed or some weird shit like that, giving my hair a marbled look. My eyes were bright blue.
“I’m just saying…we could dye your hair?” I suggested hesitantly, my mom had always been nervous about changing her appearance. She almost always loved when she did it though. The only time she hated it was when that crappy barber made it choppy everywhere and I had to fix it at home for her.
