And guess I'm... the fool

Max was chatting with his friends outside the school when he waved his hands exaggeratedly to prove some type of point. They looked kind of awkward, and Bradley decided to use that to his advantage. "Max, we were supposed to practice today." This time, Tank and the others were right behind him.

Max looked startled, and Bobby stared at Bradley, who simply wrapped an arm around Max's waist, pulling him tightly against his side. Max blinked slowly but didn't protest being touched in that manner, even leaning into the touch a bit and receiving strange looks from his companions. Max either didn't notice the looks or didn't care.

"Oh yeah, that's right!" Max exclaimed before giving his friends a thumbs up. "See you guys later!" Bradley's smile widened, and he tugged Max along. "I'm so glad you decided to join our team! We won't let you down, buddy!" He ranted, and Max smiled, showing off that tooth gap again.

"So what's our first task, practice, or whatever?" Max asked, and Bradley let go of him. "We usually just skate around, right guys?" That was a blatant lie; the things they usually did were not really good. Bradley was almost cruel to them. "Yep!" Another'friend' lied; he didn't bother remembering their name.

"What would've happened if I said no?" Max asked, and Bradley grimaced for the first time. He'd either obsess over it and try everything to get Max to join the team, or he'd obsess over it and bully Max.

"It wouldn't be pretty." Bradley admitted feeling a little more honest than he usually is.
...
Bradley sat while watching Max skate on the sidewalk. He'd do his own practice later, but for now he wanted to keep an eye on their newest teammate; he needed to see how he worked. Max was untrained; his talent wasn't curated; he was wild and messy; and he was good, but not someone who should be competing in something like the Gamma race.

Max hopped down and grabbed his skateboard. "Was that good?" Max asked, and Bradley decided to praise him before any critique. He wanted to let Max know that he was good but also make him improve. "You did excellent!" Bradley smiled, and Tank nodded in reluctant agreement.

"But you seem to jump around sporadically." That was really the only way to explain it properly; he seemed to swerve a lot, and even if that was part of skateboarding, it could become a problem. "Which isn't usually a bad thing, but in these types of races, you can get hurt."

Max looked a little hurt, so Bradley gently patted his shoulder. He realized that could seem a little condescending and rushed to speak. "I just want to make sure you're safe!" He added, which was also true. Was it for the wrong reasons? Yeah maybe. But was that the truth? Absolutely.

"Max!" Bobby was walking towards them, and Bradley's hand tightened on Max's shoulder almost possessively. This time, that move startled Max a little. "We were going to go eat lunch together, remember?" Bobby reminded him, and Max hesitated and looked at Bradley, who forced a smile, nodded, and waved goodbye to Max, who had already turned around to leave.

...
"So, what did you learn?" Bobby asked, and PJ nodded to get Max to speak. "So far? Nothing, just that Bradley doesn't know what personal space is." He sighed and took a bite of his ice cream. Yeah, he was eating ice cream for lunch! Who are you to judge? Also, it was weird how touchy Bradley was.

Always grabby and almost possessive, Max pretended not to notice for the sake of winning the gamma race. It's not like he minded either, since Bradley always stops when Max needs him to.

"What do you mean by that?" Bobby tilted his head, and Max groaned. "You don't need or want to know; trust me." He was feeding information to his friends just to leave Bradley at the last second. It'd be better not to talk about them because he didn't want to get too attached.

Soon they were done eating and cleared their stuff. Max waved goodbye to Bobby and walked to the dorms. "There you are, freshman!" He patted Max on the shoulder, and Max sighed, giving Bradley the best deadpan stare he could manage, which only seemed to encourage him to throw an arm around Max's shoulder.

"Wanna get some coffee? It'd be on me!" Bradley offered, and Max sighed. "My dad set a chore curfew for me." He mumbled, and Bradley snickered. "You're in college!" He gasped, and Max leaned closer to him. It was cold, and Bradley was warm fuck off. Bradley tightened his grip in response.

"My dad still sees me as some little kid." Max sighed, and Bradley gave him a look that had something close to sympathy, and suddenly he felt himself feeling bad for using him even if Bradley was doing the same. Max was probably starved for sympathy at this point, although he doesn't know why since he had a stable support system.

"Sorry, I have to go." Max muttered, and Bradley's manic smile faded. "Alright, see you tomorrow." He let go, and Max almost wanted to grab his hand back, but he had decent self-restraint
