Around an hour after I sent Natasha to bed and I got back to sleep, a phone call wakes me up instead. I open my blue eyes and I stare at the ceiling for a short while before grabbing my smartphone on the side table. The caller's name appears to be Nick Fury and calmly I accept the call, bringing my phone to my ear while getting out of my bed.
"Fury." I try to not mumble over the call, and I stifle a yawn to not make it sound obvious. Why the heck is Fury calling me in the middle of the night? I glance at the green glowing numbers from the digital wall clock. Half past four in the daybreak.
"I've assigned you a mission, Captain Rogers." Nick Fury, the director of SHIELD's no-nonsense, stern voice keeps me alert. I hold back a snort, and he continues to talk.
"Agent Romanoff will go along with you, and this is an undercover mission. The both of you will act as a married couple going to Venice, Italy for a honeymoon. Secret agents of HYDRA are currently based there to sell drugs to a huge organization with many drug dealers and mules as the members, the purpose is all about money."
"Oh." My blue eyes widen when I heard that Natasha will be coming along with me, and our undercover roles are a married couple. This is so sudden, as if God has given a chance to Natasha and I. Wait- I must be thinking too much.
"Pack up, your flight begins at half past six. Agent May will meet the both of you in the cafe inside the airport, she will be handing you two the flight tickets to go and back, fake passports and fake ICs. All files of the mission will be transmitted into all of your mobile devices, along with Agent Romanoff's. Good luck."
Fury hangs up the call faster than how I change clothes. I check the time again, it's almost five. I better wake Natasha up and inform her about this mission Fury assigned. Rushing out of my room, I carefully twist the doorknob to Natasha's room and she's there, tucked under the warm sheets, sleeping peacefully.
I reach out a hand, planning to gently shake Natasha awake, but a tight grip on my wrist halts me. I'm taken aback. I see Natasha's eyes twinkling in the dark like a cat's, glaring at me. Even in the dark, I can see her lips are shaped into an angry pout. I know that she isn't amused of anyone disturbing her beauty sleep, but this is urgent.
"You told me to go to bed, and now you're waking me up in the middle of the daybreak. What the hell?" In Natasha's words, I hear her yawn twice. She is annoyed to the core, and extremely sleepy. She rolls to another side of her bed and doesn't face me, "Leave."
"I'm not here for some pep talk, Romanoff. Fury rang up, we're flying to Venice at six today. Mission wise, pack up." I maintain a serious tone, hoping Natasha will cooperate with me. She rolls back to face me, her eyebrows furrow and her emerald eyes widen than usual.
"Ugh. Just. Fu-Frick everything." Natasha accidentally swore the F word, so she quickly covers up with another. She knows of all swear words, I hate that specific one a lot . Natasha lazily sits up on her bed and looks up at me cross-armed.
"What's the purpose of the mission?"
"I'll tell you later, we need to get ready first. Fury says we need to act like a married couple in the mission. Agent May will be waiting for us in a cafe inside the airport to give us the tickets, fake passports and ICs."
"You're kidding me right? Then what about Peggy? You're supposed to visit her today." Natasha protests crossly, she gets off her bed and heads towards the switch to the lights, turning them on then her wardrobe. She takes out a matte red luggage and unzips it. Natasha starts to pack up her weapons, clothes and undergarments.
"Do I look like I have a damn choice?" I retort, sucking in a breath before exiting Natasha's room. I feel her eyes watching me when I left, but all I can think about is Peggy. I'm supposed to go visit her today.
