What To Do

Suddenly all of her hardwork and achievements seemed to be flying out the window and the more Madeline stared at the pregnancy test, the more she thought of it again. She wondered when this even happened and just thinking about the times she and Kane slept together wasn't enough for her to fall pregnant. What were the odds.

“This must be a mistake,” She whispered to no one but herself. All the times she forgot to take the pill was making her feel even worse. Her body felt all weak and she had to seat on the toilet. Her head was heavy and aching badly and her eyes a bit hazy. She held her head and sighed with her mind wondering what to do next. Of course pregnancy tests weren't 100% accurate and she needed to see a gynecologist before even knowing what to do next.

She hid the pregnancy test inside her part of the closet and went straight to bed instead of having her usual night study session. She knew nothing would enter her head when it was already occupied with malicious thoughts of her future and dreams being on a thin thread if her pregnancy turned out to be true. She looked at the clock and it was getting late. She tried Kane's number but couldn't get through to him. Today was supposed to be his big day in meeting the actual client and finalizing the business deal. Maybe she would just wait for him to get back home. How much she wanted someone to urgently talk to about her troubled feelings at this point. At one point, she thought of calling home but another look at the clock made her change her mind.

An hour had passed and Madeline couldn't fall asleep. Her eyes were stuck against the wall in front of her and everytime she kept on tossing and changing sides on her bed. Her anxiety was spiking. Although pregnancy tests weren't fully accurate, there was still a higher chance of her being pregnant. How this would affect her plans and also...Kane? Madeline didn't know how Kane would react when it turns out she's pregnant with his baby. Will he be overjoyed or upset at her for being so careless and missing the pills daily.

Her deep and fearful thoughts came to a stop when she heard the sound of the door. Kane had come home and although she wanted to run into his arms and hug him, her body didn't let her and she remained on her bed. She heard Kane call her name from the living room and she had to reply, “Am here.”

Kane got into their bedroom and his smile was proudly evident. At least one of them had a fantastic day today. But Kane's smile faltered and he went to the side of the bed to hold Madeline. “Hey, are you okay?” He asked with an eyebrow up. “Am fine. Why?”

“Because I usually find you by this time still at your desk and studying. Especially now with exams coming up in less than two months.” Kane only got her close to become alert. “Madeline! You are burning in fever.” And, Madeline didn't even realize and before she could ask about his day, Kane was already out the door. She touched herself and indeed she was severely feverish. She wasn't like this when she got home at first and just the thought of her fever being a symptom of someone being pregnant was more than enough to make her feel worse.

“We need to go to the hospital.” Kane appeared back in their bedroom with a bowl of cold water and a towel hung up on his right shoulder. “There's no need. And besides it's late.” Madeline laid on the bed properly and smiled when Kane dabbed her forehead with the wet towel. “I'll get the medicines from the bathroom.” He left the towel on her forehead and disappeared into the bathroom to bring out a small box of medicines. This wasn't the first time that Madeline got a fever. It happened very often to her and Kane because of how strict workaholics they were.

“I don't care. You are burning up. Look, the towel's already warm under ten seconds. I still suggest we head to the hospital.” Kane took her temperature and it was high. He insisted but Madeline only said she would visit the doctor tomorrow morning. Kane sighed and Madeline asked, “So how was your day?” She placed her head on his lap and Kane smiled again. All the worries on his face slowly went away when he seemed to be thinking about how his day went.

“I had a bunch of lectures and had to skip two just to meet with the investor. You can't imagine how big of an office he has, Madeline. It was huge.” Madeline caught the twinkle in his bright green eyes as he continued to describe the building and the expensive atmosphere. “Someday, even I would own an office like that. I would own and manage chains of firms, restaurants, hotels and many more infrastructures. I will thrive in the business world and everyone will remember my name. Kane Whitemon.” His hands fisted as determination flashed before his eyes and the smirk of his mouth only confirmed his obsession in gaining power and reaching the top.

“That's great Kane. Am glad you finally got the deal.” And, suddenly the image of the positive pregnancy test made Madeline's smile drop instantly. She knew she didn't have the courage right now to bring about the subject of the pregnancy test not until she was sure and she was going to find out tomorrow when she visits the gynecologist.

The next day Madeline was already in Dr. Beatrice's office at around 8:30am in the early morning. Her assistant already allowed Madeline in and she was to wait for Beatrice to arrive shortly. Madeline sighed and tapped her feet on the floor anxiously before her eyes caught some pictures of little kids, babies and a chart of medical terms on female hormones and female reproductive system on the walls of Beatrice's office.

It wasn't until for another thirty minutes and Dr Beatrice stepped into her office. Madeline turned her neck to see a tall and beautiful woman probably in her early thirties with chestnut coloured hair and spectacles that highlight the colour of her eyes. She was a beauty and had a very beautiful figure to that of a model and she would know as she works in that field. The long white coat and the stethoscope around her neck only added to her being a super fine doctor in her prime. Kane recommended her when Madeline casually asked about any good gynecologists and she began to wonder if Kane saw Beatrice as a damsel. She might look thirty but she looked like a woman her age.

“Good morning. Sorry to keep you waiting. Cynthia told me I had a patient so I had to rush over.” Beatrice walked to her seat. “No it's fine. It's my fault for coming this early.” Madeline smiled and Beatrice extended her hand. “Dr Beatrice Monroe. A pleasure.” And, Madeline got up to also forward her hand to shake Beatrice's hand. “Madeline Collins.”

“So please tell me Madeline. How can I be of help?” Beatrice asked. Madeline gulped and never thought she would have to discuss the topic of pregnancy now when she was still in university. “...actually doctor, last night I took a pregnancy test and it came back positive but am sure it's a mistake because...” Madeline explained and couldn't help but get teary and feel her throat burning.

“Calm down Madeline,” Beatrice got up to offer Madeline a cup of water. Madeline swallowed and wondered where the tears came from. This wasn't supposed to happen to her. Not at this point when she was already souring heights and beginning to take charge of her future. She held her head and inhaled for the hundredth time since she got into Beatrice's office.

“Please relax Madeline,...” Beatrice patted her back softly before urging Madeline to have some water. “And, it's just like you said. A home pregnancy test isn't 100% certain. You'll need to perform a blood test to be absolutely sure. Who knows, this might all be a confusion of the pregnancy test.”

“How long would the test take Doctor?” Madeline asked and held the plastic cup tightly. She dreaded if she was pregnant. “You'll take both blood and urine tests to make sure there is presence of hCG hormone in your body. Only then can we confirm your pregnancy Madeline. And, the blood tests might take a whole day but the urine test results would be ready in a few hours. Relax.”

Madeline did just as Beatrice instructed and performed the two tests. She was already late for her work already at PVH Corp and Beatrice adviced her to come back tomorrow morning for the results. “In the meantime don't stress about anything Madeline. Trust me. You'll be fine no matter the results.” Beatrice squeezed her hands with a reassuring smile and Madeline felt a little better but she knew her mind would be at ease once she got the results by tomorrow.
