Madeline reported at her desk around mid-day. She knew that she couldn't afford to not be punctual on her second day but she didn't care. For the first time, she didn't care about maintaining decorum in everything not until she saw the results of that damned test she took earlier today. It was all her mind could think of since last night.
She took a glass of water from the dispenser on her way and gulped it all before she decided to get started on her work for the day. Mrs Jones had already sent her a positive feedback earlier this morning on her mail but she didn't have time to look at it until now. She knew it was going to be a long and tiring day but she already was here and was to keep on moving forward.
She first got the fabric and started to cut it to the desired shape and sizes. Mrs Jones's measurements also came along with her positive response so it made Madeline's work of going back to her mansion not possible anymore. The part of cutting the fabric wasn't the hardest part and Madeline got to finishing the cutting process towards evening. She was surprised by her speed despite the design soon becoming a big puffy bubble gown. She did smile at her progress and received a message from Jane concerning today's notes.
By the end of the day she was done with cutting and then came to the hardest part, knowing how to use the needle. She called it a day and left. She was by the bus stand pondering hard on recent events and she heard the sound of light thunder in the sky. It was the sound of rain dropping soon and Madeline knew she had to reach home soon before it pours. The bus surprisingly was taking a long time to arrive and the clouds were already vanishing leaving the dark sky fully naked and ready to release the rain.
The sounds of car engines as cars passed her by made Madeline sigh. She envied the people who could afford cars and not have to wait for hours on end for the public bus to arrive. It seemed like the bus wasn't going to arrive and Madeline saw other people already choosing to walk straight home inorder to avoid the upcoming rain. Even she decided to walk home as no Uber was in the area. She had only walked a couple of miles when it began to pour heavily. She needed to find shelter but there were no stalls or any joints to use as a shield from the rain.
She was drenched and completely soaked by the time she found a small open restaurant by the road. “When it rains, it pours.” She said to herself as she walked towards one of the chairs that were outside the restaurant. She took a seat to wait for the heavy rain to subside but it seems she would have to wait a long time. She considered dialing Kane's number to come pick her up but thought of what condition he would be in right now because of the rain made her reluctant.
She had to order a soda inorder to remain seated at their restaurant to which Madeline found quite absurd. The rain reminded her of back home when she and her sister Janice would play hours on end under the heavy rain. The scolding of their mother when she would come home to find her daughters all soaked under the rain. Madeline wouldn't lie when she said she did miss her childhood. It was all fun and her favorite holiday back home was during Christmas. How they would all sit on the floor and huddle up around the Christmas tree to open presents. How her mother would always adviced her kids to always strive forward.
She wondered how her mother and father especially her mother would react if it turned out she was indeed pregnant. They would instantly throw a fit and she couldn't forget how much her parents had invested in her education and then one day come to see their daughter carrying a huge belly around in campus. The picture didn't suit Madeline in the slightest but she didn't want to get ahead of herself but everytime the damn positive pregnancy test came to mind, it always made her heart race and her anxiety to rise up.
She drank her soda and tapped her feet on the hard pavement. Her damp hair stuck to her cheeks like glue and all she wanted right now was to have a relaxing hot bath and sleep nessled in Kane's warm embrace. She looked up to see Gabriela Campbell, a famous model and apparently her own designer appear on a billboard. All of her designs were legendary and known in the fashion industry. It was a sight to see both a designer and a model in one body. At one point, Madeline thought of becoming a model while she was still in high school. She was pretty but not that gorgeous and so she stuck to the four walls of designing instead.
By the time she was done with her soda, the rain had subsided a lot and was only little showers pouring from the sky. She stood up and managed to find a cab to take her back to her apartment. She had a fever last night and couldn't imagine how much her temperature must have spiked up after being under the rain for half an hour. She got back home to find Kane in an apron and he seemed to be putting something in the oven. Even till now it was still a shock to her that Kane could actually cook. He did tell her on many occasions that he could prepare lots of dishes but she never believed him until recently.
“Someone is completely drenched,” He muttered without even looking at her. It then told Madeline that he had sensed her presence in the kitchen. With a smile, she walked further in to now hug him from behind and sigh. She rested her head on his back and no doubt she needed his warmth and comfort right now. Her mind was still buzzing regarding the tests she took today and tomorrow she awaited the results. How she wished she could share her worries at this point with him but she didn't know how he would take it and she had to be sure before opening her mouth. She knew that having kids right now wasn't ideal. Infact it was insanity to have kids while one is still in school and even till today, Madeline still wonders as to why girls her age enjoy falling pregnant just to trap a rich guy.
“Are you okay?” Kane closed the oven and turned to her to now caress her wet face. “Hm-um,” She hummed before resting her head on his chest. “What are you basking in the oven my handsome chef?” Madeline moved her hands to play with his golden hair. It was a habit of hers for a long time and even though many guys hate when girls mess with their hair, Kane didn't mind at all.
“Can't you tell with the smell of cheese? It's pasta lasagna.” He chuckled and led her towards the living room. “I'll take a hot bath.” Madeline pulled away smiling and left towards the bathroom. After dinner, Madeline couldn't study and she hated this new development. Since two days now, she hadn't had her late night study session. But tomorrow would finally put an end to her worries and smiled when she turned to her left to find Kane already fast asleep. He wouldn't stop talking about the arrangements put in place for the business project. And, maybe he would have to leave New York for a few days to be present during the idea pitch. She moved herself closer to him to now wrap her arms around him. And, Kane involuntarily moved his leg to secure her in place and Madeline nessled her face against his chest. He was her one and only solace and as a solace, he always made all her worries disappear and she was able to drift to sleep quite easily.
Madeline was already in Doctor Beatrice's office and to say she wasn't nervous as hell was a big fat lie. Her whole body was on edge and deep down she continued to recite a prayer and hope she wasn't pregnant or her future plans would be out the window. And, Kane? What would happen.
The door opened and Beatrice got in holding a file and Madeline could tell those were her reports. Beatrice's face was normal so Madeline couldn't tell what the results would be. “Good morning Madeline. How are you?” Beatrice greeted with a smile as she took her seat and placed the file on her desk.
“...So?...” Madeline wanted this to be over and done with as soon as possible. She couldn't afford to be late again on her third day. That would definitely raise some questions on her professionalism.
“It's confirmed Madeline. You're thirteen weeks pregnant.” Beatrice said flatly looking into Madeline's eyes.
Madeline only continued to blink and her lips slightly parted but no words nor rage came out. She simply glued her butt to the chair with nothing to say. Her perfect world was finally crumbling.
