Beatrice led Madeline step into her office and Madeline didn't even have the nerve to take a seat. She had thought long and hard and decided this was the best option. What were the odds that she would even be able to take care of a baby at her age.

“I see you have made your decision Madeline? And, please there's no need to be formal with me. Please have a seat.” Beatrice did smile. Madeline only had her face neutral and no matter how much she tried to think and reason about it, it was all against her. Her career which she had worked so hard to reach was soon going to slip away from her hands and she wouldn't sit by and take it lightly. Kane and her mother were both right. It was stupid as to how she could ever think of raising a baby and still have her career in the front seat at the same time. It was time to be practical.

“I can't. I can't watch my life change before my eyes. I know you understand what am going through. You also went through the same ordeals...”

“I did go through the same ordeals Madeline. And, I know that this decision might hurt you in the future...” Beatrice sighed but Madeline was quick to cut her short. “I don't want to discuss this anymore Beatrice. I know you do understand my trials but you also had help. I don't have anyone. I only have my career and if I choose to keep this baby then I'll loose everything I care about. The love of my life, my family and my career.” Madeline got a little hyper but knew this was the case here. Beatrice might understand her but unlike Madeline who has no support.

“If that's your decision Madeline it's fine. But I won't perform your abortion. You are free to perform your abortion at another hospital or clinic.” Beatrice said and Madeline wasn't surprised. She only could nod but got up quickly and walked out of her office.

The days passed by and Kane never called her once. It got worse when Madeline tried to reach him and his phone remained off. She hated the distance this baby was creating between her and Kane. She hardly attended lectures while trying to still juggle with her work for Mrs Jones. She knew she needed to have an abortion fast and did visit some clinics but the atmosphere and hygiene were very terrible. And, whenever she would visit any doctor from renowned hospitals, the expenses and formalities which came with the procedures just to take out the baby was the reason Madeline refused to visit any more private hospitals.

One day Madeline was in class but she couldn't pay attention no matter the efforts she tried putting it into. It was as if the lecturer Ms Erica's voice wasn't reaching her ears. She was distracted with the fact of her belly beginning to show. The worst thing on earth was if the entire university knew about her pregnancy and her scholarship would immediately be revoked. She knew time was running out and she had no choice but to approach Clara, one of the famous girls in her department known for aborting her unwanted pregnancies.

Clara was having a chat with a guy by her locker when Madeline approached her. On any normal day Madeline never dreamed to ever initiate a mere conversation with such people who didn't value their future but her own situation had lead her towards this point. She slowly walked up to Clara and the guy hitting on Clara took notice of Madeline. Madeline strapped her hand tightly on her bag strap and seemed to looked everywhere.

“You? What do you want from me?” Clara turned around and Madeline quickly got to the point. “I want to talk to you about something in private.” Clara gave her a weird look and blew out a bubble from the gum she was chewing so loudly. “You wanna talk to me nerd? That's a surprise.” Clara chuckled and did give the guy a wink before he walked off.

“So tell me. What's your name again...Madeline? What do you want to talk about?” Clara asked and Madeline bit her lip. She felt so ashamed to be having this conversation with her but she was left with no other options. She couldn't bring herself to share this with neither Jane nor Karen. Clara didn't know anything about her except her name and it was fine with Madeline.

“I know that you...have ways of aborting your pregnancies?” Madeline cleared her throat as the shame continued to consume her. Clara didn't say but did look at her more closely before a smile appeared on her lips. “Are you pregnant?” She didn't need to ask but did anyways. She wanted to see the grim look on Madeline's face. “So even the most bright and focused student is sleeping around, who would have thought?” Clara chuckled while Madeline kept her eyes glued to the floor. If only she had been very careful, she wouldn't have seen this day when her character was already being questioned by some hippy like Clara.

“Relax I won't tell if that's what causing such nervousness. Besides I don't give a shit if you're pregnant. It's smart choice to get rid of that bun in your oven before it's too late.” Clara smirked before she added. “Take out a pen and paper and write this prescription down.” Madeline took out her notepad and pen to write down the medicine. She wasn't familiar with this medicine and didn't know what side effects it might cause but someone like Clara had taken them multiple times before and she seemed pretty fine after aborting more than five pregnancies.

Madeline did her very best to avoid all the people she was familiar with at college especially Jane and Karen and some of Kane's friends. She got to the cafeteria to get a fruit punch as she was craving some. She checked her phone and her heart sank even more when she saw all of her texts and voice messages which she had sent to Kane were still marked unread. She wondered why Kane had to take this step just to prove his point. She couldn't have imagined Kane's reaction would be this way.

Madeline didn't report to work and went straight home. She stopped by a pharmacy to get the prescribed medication but it wasn't authorized to her. She was frustrated and already saw herself walking into one of those shady pharmacies downtown. Luckily they didn't ask for her ID nor ask any unnecessary questions and she was relieved. She got back to the apartment and didn't want to think of the consequences at the moment. It would only take two seconds for her to pop the pills in her mouth and it will be a done deal.

She bit her lip again and reached for the refrigerator to take out a bottle of water. She quickly took out the pills and placed it on the kitchen counter. She was nervous about all of this and knowing the fact that she was about to take a life did make her feel guilty. But seeing her career just a mile away in front of her was enough to make her not change her mind and back out. Afterall she had nothing to loose if she only got rid of her pregnancy.

She poured herself a glass and had the pills in her hands. Her hands were shaking and her resolve wasn't steady. She was conflicted between right and wrong but one can't say she was doing wrong here. She was only looking after her future. She was being practical just like how everyone told her to be. Her mind was already birthing so many different thoughts and Madeline only closed her eyes tightly before throwing the pills into her mouth. She cleansed her palette with the glass of water and leaned against the wall with a heavy breathing. She didn't know what she was feeling right now but she didn't need to care anymore as she had already taken the pills.

Her mind went to Kane and she only wished he was here by her side when taking this step. She was feeling very lonely with Kane choosing to avoid her calls and messages. She quickly wiped her tears before deciding to head to the bedroom. Those were the answers she needed to take this step and she didn't want to think about it anymore. She wanted to throw it all behind her like a bad memory. She only walked two steps when she felt a sharp pang in her abdomen. It was quick and in a second the pain was gone. Madeline assumed the pills were already taken effect and she could already see her perfect life like it was before flashing back before her eyes.

She had already made it to her bedroom when the pain emerged again but this time the sharp pain continued and didn't go away. Her eyes popped out in shock as to the amount of pain she was feeling inside her belly. “Ah!” She screamed and already saw herself hitting the floor with her bag tossed towards the floor first and all her items poking out from her bag. Her vision was becoming hazy and the pain only increased.

She tightly wrapped her arms on her belly and grunted in pain. The pain only grew worse and she could only grunt and scream in her now low voice. She screamed for help and hoped one of the neighbors in the building would hear her but minutes passed and no one rushed in to save her. It sinked in that she was alone and her hands reached out to grab her phone from the floor but the intense pain was fighting a battle with her.

She wondered if this immense pain was also affecting the life that was inside of her. She wanted a fast job but the thought of her unborn baby suffering in agony because of her made her very afraid.
