It had been a beautiful warm sunny day, the day their house caught fire and burned into ashes.
5 year old little Silvia was playing in the dirt at their backyard when the fire erupted, her big brown eyes flickered as she watched the smoke and fire engulf her home sweet home, taking along her parents, whose screams rung in her ears.
Police, fire department, neighbours, it was a chaos of crowd, gathered at the fallen residence, wailing over their demise, sorrowing over the little family's fall.
But no one knew it was actually those little hands of the beautiful daughter that had unplugged the gas pipes, which had caused the eventual burst and fire, and the death of her parents.
No knew that the reason of the fire was that, 5 year old Silvia's hands had crumpled their dreamy white picket fenced home, along with all her loved ones.
She didn't shed a single tear.
On the contrary, when a social worker came to pick her up, she had given the lady a toothy grin.
Despite the ominous feeling the worker got from the little girl, she couldn't help the warmth that melted her heart at the innocent smile.
So, instead of registering her in a foster home or orphanage, Jessica Miles adopted the girl as her own daughter.
As days went by, Jessica found the little one to be a wonder.
How was a child so quiet and subtle? It was unnerving.
As Silvia played in front of the cackling fire on a cold, winter night, Jessica sat by the rocking chair and stared at her growing child.
She pondered over if she'd ever seen anyone's hair being as dark as Silvia's, coal black and glazed like a sharpened knife. Her eyes, mixture of mystery and illusion, a dark shade of brown, almost to a point where one might mistake them as only pupils.
Though her eyes may fright one at first glance, they ought to lure your soul in and eventually break the ice or fear that may have arose once.
Everyone was bound to fall in love with the girl eventually, and she didn't even need to talk to them or befriend them for that. It was just a subtle glance and the magic worked like an illusion.
Often amidst the darkness of the night, Jessica could feel herself creeping up with fear.
"What are you?"
Jessica had whispered this question to herself over the years as little Silvia turned 12.
Her brown skin had now flourished into a gorgeous smoothness, highlighting those sharp cheekbones and pointy nose, doe eyes speaking more than those cupid bow lips.
Was it legal for someone to be this beautiful?
Ethereal.
Otherworldly.
Those were the only words that could satisfy the mother while describing her adopted daughter.
Silvia barely ever talked to anyone or even made any friends. So, it was quite a surprise when she'd brought a boy over for study lessons one day.
Jessica was enthusiastic and encouraged her on having more friends, welcoming the boy, Leo, with a warm smile and prepared snacks for them.
It was the first time since she'd taken Silvia in, that she'd seen her smile so bright and wide.
The same warmth enveloped her heart once agaim, but on the same time, a shiver ran down her spine. For some unknown reason.
"I'll be down making dinner if you need me."
She'd said and left the kids to do their homeowork. Her heart hoping for a future where this little orphan girl might find some sort of normalcy in her life and be a teenager. Be herself and enjoy her life.
Jessica Miles felt her heart at ease for the first time, knowing she'd raised her right and did justice by the girl.
It was a month later that Leo was found dead by the woods.
Apparently a group of boys went to explore and play hide and seek when a bunch of wild ravens attacked, everyone managed to escape except the boy Silvia had come to like.
Jessica had rushed to her school like a mad woman but the sight of a calm Silvia put her at immediate ease.
She tried her best to coax the girl to talk or express her feelings but she remained as stiff as a cold rock.
Sometimes Jessica wondered if she ever blinked-
Silvia remained expressionless throughout Leo's funeral, hand clasped in her mother's as the girl in black looked mystical.
All pairs of eyes often shifted to glance at her way, the same amount of questions and wonder swirling among them as they eyed the unearthly beauty.
It was the same night as the funeral that Silvia broke down through her façade.
She'd clung to her mother's arms as sobs tore out of her small frame. Jessica had cried herself along with the girl, hugging her tight and comforting her at her best.
It was also the first ever time that Silvia had hugged her. First time ever Jessica actually felt like her mother.
"Don't ever leave me, mama. I love you."
Jessica's heart threatened to explode as she gathered her daughter in her arms and smothered her with kisses and love, promising to never, ever leave her.
They fell asleep like that, a mother securely holding her daughter against her chest, a soft smile on her lips as she felt complete for the first time in her lonely life.
Jessica never woke up.
A 12 year old Silvia Esther Miles was placed under a foster home prorgam.
The moment she stepped foot onto the porch of the tainted, ramshackled three storeyed structure, all eyes dug into her soul and little boys and girls made a way for her, as if they were programmed to do so.
Her first night at the foster home went expectantly well, it was also the night where little Silvia made a promise to herself.
A promise to change and be as normal as her mama had wished for her to be. On the same time have an armor around her heart to never let it have any place for anyone in her life.
Of course it was clear as a day to her that she was bound to lose all her loved ones.
Her little mind was aware of the curse she'd been sucked into—despite not knowing the reason—but she'd gladly accepted the fate she was born with.
After all, loneliness never bothered her.
Years passed by and she got accustomed to the feeling of being alone amidst a crowd, to fake a smile and sympathy even though her heart didn't feel an ounce of those said emotions.
She grew up to be a shell full of pretense.
She'd finally mastered the skills to lead a life without having to lose anyone she loved, because she didn't have anyone to crack that wall and enter her heart.
Till him.
