Laughter from the three of us echoed in the nearly empty park close by the ice cream stand that Ryujin insisted on buying from for all three of us. Although I protested, she wouldn't hear any of it, coming up with excuse after excuse like 'it's your birthday', 'you never let me treat you', and more. Unlike Kai who excitedly took the ice cream without complaints making Ryujin roll her eyes just a little but it was worth it because of the giant grin on Kai's face in return.

"I can't believe you're working on your birthday," Kai whines next to me with a pout, licking away at the ice cream slowly melting down the cone, "couldn't you use it to get the day off or anything?"

"My birthday sadly isn't an excuse for an absence at work, Kai," I say, giving his shoulder a gentle comforting pat before returning to my own ice cream that is beginning to melt as well.

"You can't blame us for being at least a little disappointed," Ryujin says with a pout of her own in between bites of her ice cream bar. The chocolate sticking to the corners of her lips, "you deserve a break once and a while."

"I can take a break once the summer hits," I say with a small sigh but still smile at both of them, "but I still plan on working because I really do need the money."

"Don't we all?" Kai groans, slumping into the park bench while starting to eat at the cone, "why does everything seem to get more complicated the older we get?"

"It's called more responsibilities," Ryujin says teasingly, "not like you would know what that is."

"Excuse me?!?" Kai gasps dramatically at Ryujin's claim, making me giggle, "I believe I know more about responsibility than you."

"Sure mister my soulmate is older than me so he takes care of almost everything for me," Ryujin teases further making Kai's turn a deep blush red at the accusation.

"You take that back!" Kai launches off the bench chasing Ryujin, luckily both of them have already finished their ice cream.

I watch them with a giant grin enjoying the joyful chaos they bring into my life. I really don't know what I'd do without them. The sentimental thought makes my heart skip a beat as a pleasant reminder of how much I love them as my best friends. Truly the only friends that I really have but I didn't mind as long as it's them.

Unfortunately, the alarm on my phone immediately interrupts the moment. The reminder that I now only have 15 more minutes to get to my shift. A slight pout forms on my face knowing I have to leave for work even if I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. At this point, Kai was huffing and obviously tired from running around after Ryujin but upon seeing my solemn expression he knew all too well I had to go.

"Nooooo," he begins whining but still tugs my arm to get me off the park bench, "don't tell me it's time for you to go already!"

"I'll see you tomorrow-"

"We will walk you to work," Ryujin says, giving my nose a soft bop before getting her stuff along with Kai's, "but let's get going, that way you don't get in trouble for being late."

During the entire walk to the convenience store, Kai wouldn't let go of me by either hooking his arm through mine or holding my hand. Ryujin rolled her eyes at him but at the same time, she understood where he was coming from. She wanted to spend the rest of the day with me just as much as him, maybe more but she was better at concealing it. I couldn't even help it myself when feeling a slight pit beginning to form in my stomach when thinking about spending the rest of my birthday working. But what can you do? I can't quit this job and a birthday is no excuse for me to take leave off of work.

It wasn't long until the familiar awning of the convenience store appeared. Just a few feet from the entrance I pull both of them into a tight embrace. They reciprocated the hug, squeezing back just a tightly if not more.
